There is actually a simple method that requires absolutely no sewing and takes less than thirty minutes. Once you learn how to make a tutu skirt, you can quickly and easily make many different tutus in a variety of colors, sizes and styles for your little ballerina.
How to Make a Tutu Skirt
Once you have your tutu completed, your daughter, or your special little friend can enjoy it as a costume for Halloween, wear it to ballet class, practice dancing, or use it to play dress up. Thankfully, it is not complicated at all and there is absolutely no sewing required. You can certainly make more than one in just an hour or two.
To make your own tutu, you will need to use a durable material for the waist, such as an elastic waistband or a thick, strong ribbon. Make sure it is wide and strong enough to hold onto your little one’s waist when she is moving around. You can secure the ribbon or elastic waistband using a hot glue gun and a knotted bow. You can also make the elastic waistband more durable by sewing the ends together using a needle and thread.
The main material that is used to make a tutu is called tulle. Take your child’s measurements and cut the tulle accordingly to fit your little girl. To make a nice full tutu, lay two strips of tulle on top of each other.
The slip knot is the most common technique for making tutu skirts. Fold your precut layer of tulle in half and then slide the folded side underneath your waistband or ribbon. Take the unfolded ends and put them through the loop and pull down on the ends to tighten your knot. Continue tying slip knots until you have filled your ribbon or elastic waistband. Make sure that you don’t crimp the band and keep the knots even and very close together. For a tighter and fuller tutu, you don’t want to leave any space in between the knots. If you do choose to leave some space in between, make sure that it is a very small gap and that it is even all the way around.
Once everything is secure and in place, you can add many different and beautiful decorations. You can buy various embellishments for your tutu that will make it unique. You can really get creative with the colors of tulle, bows, ribbons, lace, chiffon, beads, glitter, and a host of other deigns. One other option is to buy two different colors of tulle and alternate them around the band. When making a tutu skirt, the possibilities are virtually endless.
Now that you know how to make a tutu skirt you can easily make many more for your special little ballerina. Be creative and have fun!
