What You Need To Know Before You Hire A Lawn Care Company.
Hi, I'm Nick Summers and we will be discussing the subject of lawn care.
I will be talking about many subjects here and in the future. Before we go on to the lawn care subject, I would like to answer a question many have asked me and that "do I own or run a lawn care company." The answer is no. Though I have been involved with the lawn and garden industry for many many years, I am not trying to sell you a lawn service. I hope from these tips you can negotiate with a person or company to get a more satisfying experience when you do hire someone.
So lets get started. This is what you need to know before you hire a lawn care company or landscaper.
A popular question is "how high and how much should I cut my grass". The first rule of thumb is never cut more than 1/3 of the grass height at one time. If you don't remember anything in this section but this, you will still be way ahead most people. For example, if you have grass that is 3 inches high then you would not cut off more than 1 inch. Personally, I like to let it grow to 4 inches and then cut it down to 3 inches. The taller that you let it grow, the more lush and healthier the grass is. In the hot dry weather, taller grass will hold more moisture and root deeper. What you are trying to do through these practices is keep stress off the lawn. Less stress means less chance the disease and weeds will take over. A lawn that is mowed 1 to 2 times a week has much less stress than a lawn that is waiting 2 weeks to get mowed.
Now you might say that the weather was so bad that we couldn't cut it until it got to high. In this case, cut some off 1 day and then cut it down to the desired height within the next two days. Don't try to cut all of it off or you will have an unsightly mess as well as adding more stress to the lawn because you have violated the 1/3 rule.
The next most asked question is "when is the best time of the day to mow". The best time of the day to mow is when it is the coolest, usually in the morning. Evening is also good but make sure that you're not mowing too late when the grass is wet. Just avoid mowing in the heat of the day. It's just as hard on the grass as it is on you. When talking with your potential lawn care person, you might ask them to mow when it is cool. Obviously, they have to mow someone's lawn in the heat of the day but just make sure it is not yours.
Another important factor to remember is that a lawn care company usually likes to stay on schedule. So if they start on your lawn at 7:30 in the morning every mowing, they might start mowing your lawn even though it is raining or if there has just been a heavy rain. This causes the grass to clump up, the mower to clog, and as mentioned before, spread any disease much faster.
That concludes todays tips on hiring the right lawn care company.
