The general consensus of people living in the modern world is that anything of significant value should have a clean record and some sort or proof that it actually is valuable. Jewelry is no exception. For this reason, most responsible individuals prefer certified diamonds and gemstones. This is especially true on engagement and wedding rings and as a result, jewelers usually recommend certified diamonds to customers.
Jewelers recommend certified diamonds for use in wedding rings for one simple reason. A wedding ring is the most expensive purchase a man will make during his lifetime other than an engagement ring. Consequently, it makes sense to use a diamond possessing certification marking it authentic. There are other practical reasons for using these diamonds in wedding rings or other pieces of jewelry. Those reasons mostly surround the fact that it is easier to appraise diamond jewelry if the diamond bears a certification as well as the fact that in the case of resale, a certified diamonds carry a higher value than uncertified diamonds.
One other reason for buying wedding rings with certified diamonds is for social reasons. Diamonds have a violent history around them and much has been done to eradicate this tendency. However, there are still diamonds that are sold to find violence against groups of people as well as civil wars. The diamond industry has blacklisted those sources and dubbed them "Blood Diamonds" or "Conflict Diamonds"; these diamonds are never certified by any reputable organization.
There are several different diamond certification organizations, including the GIA, AGS, HRD, EGL and IGL, to name a few. The most reputable organizations are the GIA, AGS and HRD. All certification organizations certify both colorless and colored diamonds using the well known 4 Cās ā color, carat, clarity and cut, but the GIA is most meticulous in its grading methods. It is for this reason that most certified diamonds bear GIA certification.
Certified diamonds on wedding rings come in a myriad of shapes, some of which are well known while others are obscure and may be out of use. Some of the most common diamond shapes include round brilliant, princess and marquise cut diamonds. Some of the obscure cuts are the older cuts such as the radiant, French and Old European Cuts which hail from the 17th and 18th centuries.
People looking for certified diamonds should exercise some caution when looking at diamonds as it has become commonplace for unscrupulous businessmen to fake certifications that are identical to those provided by the GIA and other laboratories. For this reason, certifications should be double checked, this way the man buying the diamonds for wedding rings can be sure the diamonds are genuine certified diamonds.
