An alcoholic's body is not in tip top working order, just as those with other debilitating ailments. In order to gain control of one's life, an alcoholic really needs to get their daily habits and life into a routine, and on a schedule. Crazy eating and sleep schedules take a toll on a normal body, but add a large quantity of alcohol to the mix and it is a recipe for disaster.

To begin a new routine on a schedule you have to possess self-control and be able to avoid over indulgence in drinking alcohol along with eating, exercising and sleeping on a schedule that is relatively the same every day. Every day that the schedule is adhered to, it will get easier to stick with and you will notice how much better you feel. The results of daily exercise, healthy eating habits and good sleep patterns have been reported to increase your feeling of well-being.

Getting the will-power to start an exercise program and stick with it can be challenging if you find it easier to relax with a few cocktails. The big hurdle for alcoholics to get over is getting into an exercise program, you need take that first step and do it! The exercise you decide to engage in, doesn't have to be strenuous to be healthy for you. If you are older, out of shape and/or overweight, a low impact routine is better for your joints and safer, to avoid injury.

Good exercise choices are swimming, walking and riding a stationary bike for at least 30 minutes, three times a week is a great start, once you start to see results you can add to your workout. Sleeping for an alcoholic is often difficult, when you feel like can't sleep without a few drinks, trying to sleep sober can be futile.

This will be difficult for a while but once you get a few nights of sleep with out drinking first it will get easier and easier. Taking a sleeping pill is not recommended because they can become addicting and you will be substituting one addiction for another, sleeping pills instead of the alcohol.

If it is too difficult to bear, a natural or holistic sleep aid that is non-addicting may help you. Melatonin has become a very popular holistic sleep aid, by taking one to three milligrams, the standard recommended dosage; many have found relief to sleeplessness without feeling hung over upon awaking. One warning comes with Melatonin, it can produce vivid dreams for some, if you are one that has nightmares, you may want to avoid Melatonin.
