There are many people that get traffic violations and simply assume that they have no recourse but to pay the fine, take the points against their license, and forget about it. This is not true however – there are actually many tips you can use to help avoid a traffic ticket in many cases, and in this article I will discuss a few of them.
Many times a traffic ticket will be given in error, since many traffic cops are weary from working many long hours. If they are working a very busy thorough fare, they may stop up to a hundred cars in a single day. Do you think they may make at least a couple of mistakes? Human nature says most likely they will. Mistakes such as not realizing that a road sign is not visible to the driver from a certain angle. This happens quite a bit, and if you did not see a road sign such as the speed limit sign because it was obstructed by a tree or other object, you may be able to have the ticket dismissed in court. Of course you must first document this issue!
This brings me to the second very important point – you must document everything that happened before, during and after you were pulled over. No matter how small the detail may seem at the time, document everything since even one little detail may be enough to sway a judge to see things your way. Was there a dangerous driver in front of you or beside you? Was the weather bad or good? Were the road signs clearly visible? Document all of these things, just in case you do end up in a traffic court.
Another overlooked detail about traffic stops is having the proper attitude when being approached by an officer. You must realize that a police officer is just doing his job, and he may have had nothing but jerks all day long. This means if you are a jerk too, or give him/her a hard time, you will only make the situation worse! Be polite, be courteous, and do exactly as the officer asks and you find yourself being let off with a warning to begin with rather than a traffic violation.
To conclude your strategy for avoiding traffic tickets, if you do happen to get one make sure you research the laws in your state regarding the particular statute that you supposedly violated. Be ready for court if you must go, and realize that many traffic cops are scheduled to go to court on their day off, and may not make it anyway. If they don’t show up, guess what? You get off the hook! So in closing I would recommend fighting every traffic ticket, rather than just giving in and paying it without a thought. Who has that kind of money, anyway.
