For people who decide to become doctors, they may believe that learning and practicing medicine will be their primary focus. They might also think it is one of the most difficult parts of their practice. Unfortunately for many physicians, this is not the case. With the emergence of private healthcare and insurance companies, becoming well-versed in the details of medical billing and coding is almost as important as treating the patient. Without payment, a doctor cannot keep the practice doors open. Many doctors have found it necessary to hire specialists to handle the books for their medical practices. This way, they can focus on treating the patients. The medical billing staff can focus on the details of how, when and where to send bills for payment. Requests for payment often must be sent to insurance companies, government agencies and the patient repeatedly until they are paid.

Insurance

A crucial part of physician billing is called medical coding. Each service provided to the patient is noted with a special code. Depending on what code is noted for each patient’s bill, the insurance policy may or may not cover the treatment. In some cases, what may seem like a reasonable medical procedure will not be covered by the insurance company because it is not life-threatening. In other cases, the insurance company may routinely deny a patient’s coverage the first time it is submitted in hopes that it will not be pursued. A skilled medical claims billing coordinator will know when and how to deal with the insurance companies so that the physician who treated the patient for their ailments an be paid for their services and expertise.

Government Programs

Government medical programs can be confusing for both the patient and doctor. Some medical care is covered under certain conditions, but not others. There is often a requirement in paperwork and finances for patients to qualify. Government assistance for patients often takes several months to be paid to the doctor’s office. It does happen, but it takes time. The reimbursement may get lost on occasion. When this happens, it is up to the physician’s office or medical billing staff to track down the payment.

Patients

For patients that do not have insurance or have difficulty getting coverage for certain procedures, the doctor’s office must look to the individual to pay the bill in its entirety. This is difficult for many people, as the figures can be high. It is often up to the doctor’s office to set up a payment plan when insurance coverage is denied. This way, the patient can fulfill their financial obligation and the doctor can be paid.

In conclusion, while healthcare billing services can be confusing and tedious for medical professionals, they often find it easier to bring in a healthcare practice management company so that they can treat their patients, and someone else can look after the payment process.
