Different Types of Dental Implants
There are three main varieties of dental implants. Each type are used for an explicit objective. Most dental implants are made from titanium, a metal that is most successful at fusing with live bone.
The most common type of dental implant is called the root form implant. These implants are the closest in shape and size to a natural tooth root. They used most often in wide, deep bone to provide a base for restore one or more teeth. Anesthetic is used to put the patient completely under, and after the implant is carefully placed, the gums are closed with stitches. During the healing process the bone grows around the implant and creates a sturdy support. Then the implant is uncovered and an extension is attached, ready to brace the new tooth or teeth.
The second type of dental implant is a plate form implant. If the jaw is too slim for a root form implant, a plate form implant is an alternative. The plate form implant is long and flat so that it fits into a narrower jawbone. Following anesthesia, the dentist exposes the area of the jawbone that will be implanted and prepares the bone to accept the shape of the implant. Similar to root form implants, the plate form implant is set into place and the gums are closed with stitches.
The third type of implant is a subperiosteal implant. In some instances, there isn't enough bone at all in the jaw to use a plate form or root form implant. The subperiosteal implant is made to sit on top of the bone, but under the gums. This can be done by two methods, a single or dual surgery method.
There are many advantages to getting dental implants rather than dentures or a bridge. Dental implants feel and look like real teeth. Neighboring teeth are not altered so that the implant can be supported. Dental implants can provide more confidence because you can eat and speak normally.
