Anxiety and panic has been discovered as ‘’two power twin’’ that saps or drains the oil of joy and happiness in one’s life, drains your mental energy and causes one to view life in a negative way.

Anxiety is a state of feeling nervous and worried that something BAD is going to happen to you. According to Dr. G. Keith Olson- Anxiety can be defined as the experience of unrest, apprehension, dread or agitated worry. It has been described as fear in the absence of real or danger or fear of something that is not clearly understood.

Most people are gradually building up their anxiety rate unconsciously while some are experiencing high levels of anxiety {extreme apprehension}.

Anxieties arise as a result of the challenges we face in life, dwelling on negative thoughts and belief.

HERE ARE SOME OF THE CAUSES OF ANXIETY

  1. Constantly taking thought of what to eat, drink, and wear etc. Mathew 6:25.

  2. Fear of accident like road, air, fire, traffic accident etc.

  3. Fear of death

  4. Fear of loneliness

  5. Fear of one’s deteriorating state of health

  6. Fear of poverty, lack and want

  7. Fear of the troubled- state of one’s nation e.g. political unrest, tribal war etc

  8. Fear of failure i.e. ‘’ What if I don’t make it or succeed in life’’

  9. Fear of marital commitment

  10. Fear of rejection in a relationship by one’s partner

  11. Fear of inferiority complex

  12. Fear of not getting married early in life

  13. Fear of not pleasing God

  14. The thought of a gory past experience e.g. rape, hurtful divorce experience etc

  15. Impatience- unable to wait for answers to prayers made unto God.

The lists are just endless.

THE EFFECTS OF ANXIETY

They include;

  1. Fatigue

  2. Loss of appetite

  3. Insomnia- the condition of being unable to sleep

  4. Stomach upset

  5. Alcohol and harmful drug intake as cover up for fear and worry

  6. Unable to pray fervently

  7. It can lead to having fear of heights {acrophobia}, fear of open space {agoraphobia} etc.

What about PANIC? Panic is a sudden feeling of great fear that cannot be controlled and prevent you from thinking clear. It’s an overpowering fear i.e. a sudden feeling of fear or anxiety, especially among many people, that comes on suddenly, is overwhelming, appears to be uncontrollable, and may seem to be unfounded.

When people go through anxiety and panic attack, it leaves them with an unpleasant experience. You thought you stop breathing because your chest and throat feel tight.

  1. When you drive, do you fear getting stock in traffic, bridge or the red lights?

  2. Maybe you feel nervous and afraid you might loose control or go insane in front of others?

  3. Do you struggle with anxious thoughts that will not stop?
