Papillon came from the French word which means butterfly and is used to refer to a type of dog which is more commonly known as a Continental Toy Spaniel. It is one of the oldest types of Spaniel dog breeds and can easily be identified through its butterfly-like head and distinct temperament.

Timidness

Papillon’s timidness is one of the few problems pet owners may experience. Butterfly dogs have the tendency to stick to the side of its owner instead of socializing with other animals including strangers and children. Fortunately, through proper training this timidness may be broken but it should be addressed during the early stages of development of a Papillon.

Intelligence and Friendliness

This dog is classified as one of the most intelligent dog breeds which can be taken to the advantage of its owner. If brought up under a flourishing environment then owners will reap the rewards of its character, being one of the friendliest pets in the world. If the dog is well-trained from its early years, it is guaranteed that you will never need to worry about its friendliness as well as its level of intelligence.

Big Dog Attitude

There is much debate regarding the "big dog attitude" of Butterfly dogs, in fact there are several reports of aggression towards dogs which are larger in size. More often than not, these dogs also exemplify a possessive character. They have a tendency to be over competitive with other dogs. These dogs will do their very best just to maintain their position inside the heart of their owner.

Lap Dog

Another special feature of this type of dog is its habit of insisting to receive regular cuddling, scratching behind the ears and constant petting. They are also sound sensitive and will respond to different types of sounds no matter how soft, loud and unexpected it may be. Thus pet owners of Papillon should prepare living in a noisy environment because these dog breeds have the tendency to bark at the top of their lungs every time a stranger passes by your vicinity.

Obedience

Butterfly dogs are known for their obedience especially to their owners as proven by the number of contests which these dog breeds have won. They are best known for their trick performances and have a sense of wonder that never ceases.

Hyperactive Character

Several pet enthusiasts consider Butterfly dogs as hyperactive pets since these dogs prefer to always be on the move and to be attended to by its master. Thus, anyone who wishes to have this type of dog as a pet in the future should make sure that they have enough patience, energy, alertness, speed and stamina to work side by side with their chosen Butterfly dog.

The temperament of butterfly dogs may vary from one owner to another. It greatly depends on the way a pet owner trains his or her pet. If you wish to have a friendly and sociable butterfly dog then you need to invest time and effort to teach it, otherwise your pet may end up being too aggressive or too timid which is something you would not appreciate in the future.
