Midway is a suburb of Swadlincote, which is a town of some 36,000 people. Sometimes the local people will shorten the name of the town to 'Swad' when they are talking about it on a day to day basis. The village of Midway is to the North of Swadlincote. Midway merges into Newhall which is a village that is around a mile away from Midway. Newhall village is served by a community centre on the high street. The community centre has meeting rooms, a café and various rooms for learning sessions.

The village of Church Gresley is another community that is also very close to Midway. The local football team is the Gresley Rovers, who have participated in the Northern Premier League First Division. The village of Hartshorne is another community that is close to Medway village. The local people pronounce the name of their village as 'Artsun'. There is a public house in Hartshorne that is called The Rodney. This pub is not named, as some people may think, after the character Rodney in the TV show Only Fools and Horses. In fact the pub is named after a rather more distinguished person from the past, an eighteenth century nobleman called the First Baron Rodney.
