To generate list of some of India's most unique places to visit, we spoke with several travel experts, and asked them to recommend unusual destinations based on their own past journeys. There visits spanned across all the states in India, right from Andaman Nicobar to Mumbai and from Kanyakumari to Kashmir. The interesting part about this research was that some of the places mentioned were unknown to me and a lot of my peers.
For now we have selected four of the most interesting places amongst them.
Chail in Himachal Pradesh: Worlds highest cricket ground:
Chail is 49 km from Shimla. The Chail Palace is well known for its architecture. The cricket ground and a polo ground which is there at an altitude of 2,444 meter, is owned by erstwhile royal family of Patiala. The ground has the world's highest cricket ground.
Majuli or Majoli: Largest island in river (area 884 Sq.KM):
Majuli or Majoli (Assamese:??????) Is a large river island in the Brahmaputra River, in the Indian state of Assam. (The largest river island in the world is Bananal Island in Brazil) Majuli had a total area of 1,250 square kilometers (483 sq mi).
Rat Temple, Karni Mata Temple, Deshnok, Rajasthan:
The Karni Mata temple at Deshnoke, 30 km from Bikaner, in its present form was completed in the early 20th century in the late Mughal style by Maharaja Ganga Singh of Bikaner. Throughout the year, pilgrims from around India visit to pay religious tribute to Karni Mata at the Deshnoke temple.
During Navratri thousands of people travel to the temple by foot. If one of the rats is killed, it must be replaced with one made of solid gold. Sighting a white rat amidst hordes of black rats is considered especially auspicious.
Shani Shingnapur, Sonai, Place with no locks:
This is a village in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Situated in Nevasa taluka in Ahmednagar district, the village is known for its popular temple of Shani, the Hindu god of the planet (graha) Saturn. Shingnapur is 35 km from Ahmednagar city. Shingnapur is also famous for the fact that no house in the village has doors, only door frames. Despite this, no theft is reported in the village.
Villagers never keep their valuables under lock and key. Very strange but true.
India is one big package of culture and legend that never fails to captivate the visitor. But there are also endless natural splendors. The mighty Himalayas that straddle the north, the vast Indo-Gangetic Plains, lush tropical jungles teeming with wildlife, and a 5,000 km-long coastline embellished with golden beaches. The outdoorsman will enjoy the challenges of adventure, while the culture-seeker can soak up the history of the country. A holiday in India is always an eventful experience and one that requires perfect scheduling, planning, and budgeting. This is a vast country and logistics are an important factor for travelers.
Therefore if you are really planning for an unusual experience and would want the above wonders to be a part of your travel, do research about them online, and make sure they are a part of your Itinerary. These places are well connected to almost all big cities in India.
