Casio’s story begins in 1946, when founder Kashio Seisakujo set up his business in Mitaka, Tokyo. When marketing for the world’s first compact fully electric calculator – the Casio 14-A, a product that would kickstart Casio’s reputation for creating technologically advanced electric goods – began in 1957, Casio Computer Co., Ltd. was established and a legacy was born.

Casio is today regarded as one of the world’s leading producers of electronic goods, with products ranging from cameras to keyboards. The first Casio watch, the CASIOTRON electronic wristwatch, released in 1974. Since then, the rich history of Casio watches is intertwined with the overall history of the brand, with various turning points throughout the years resulting in the extensive collection of high-performance, multi-function Casio watches available in 2011.

The 1980s was a rich period for Casio watches, with a series of important advancements taking place. 1982 saw the release of Casio’s first combination analogue watch, 1984 began with the release of Casio’s databank telephone number storage watch, 1985 witnessed the release of Casio’s super-thin digital watch, and 1989 took another bold step forward with a digital Casio watch with weather prediction sensors.

Some Casio watches prove so popular that their own histories begin to take shape from the moment they become a hit with the watch-wearing public. In April 1983, Casio’s first G-Shock watch was released to huge acclaim and popularity – it was the company’s first shock resistant watch, and the concept led to the release of the women’s version, Baby-G, in December 1994. The two Casio ranges have become such a Casio signature that new models continue to be released today.

In the 1990s, Casio experimented with radio-controlled and GPS watches, which brought them into the 21st century. Impressive firsts, including wristwatches that featured integrated MP3 players and digital cameras, occurred in the early years of the noughties, and further new frontiers were explored until we reach now, where Casio as an innovator is sure to surprise us all with a new advancement that will advance it to the next stage in its history.
