The feeling of heartburn that we are all common with is also known as acid reflux or acid indigestion. The cause behind the unpleasant burning sensations in our chest is the leakage of stomach contents into the esophagus through the improperly functioning Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES). The stomach contents are rich with acid, which is very harmful for the inner lining of the esophagus that doesn't have the protection against acid like the inner lining of the stomach. So it's logic that for getting rid of constant heartburn one should reduce the acidity in the stomach and improve the functions of LES.

Heartburn is quote a common symptom of acid reflux, but it's not right to use the both terms of synonyms. In fact, some forms of acid reflux are not manifested through heartburn sensations but still the esophagus is deteriorated by the high acidity coming from the stomach. The treatment of acid reflux problems is quite often a matter of rational lifestyle change that will help eliminate the actual causes behind frequent acid indigestion.

Some of the most common causes behind Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) are diet, smoking and activity after consuming food. You may think hot sauces and foods are provoking acid reflux, but you will be surprised to learn that it's more common in those who eat foods rich with salt and saturated fats. Other reflux provoking agents include citrus fruits, chocolate and caffeine containing drinks. Smoking is another common cause for acid reflux, as smokers are twice as prone to experiencing this problem than non-smokers. Going to bed, resting horizontally or performing heavy physical activity also provokes acid reflux.

There are numerous medications that can be very effective in relieving acid reflux. Drugs like Nexium and Prilosec help reduce the levels of acidity in the stomach, which in turn helps normalizing the symptoms of GERD. However, there are many people who have poor tolerance to the drugs and experience side effects while taking synthetic medications. If you're one of them then you might be looking for a natural solution to acid reflux. Fortunately for you, there is one and you will be surprised to learn how common it is.

The common apple can be as effective as drugs like Nexium for treating GERD and associated symptoms. Its dietary properties make it perfect for addressing a lot of issues and it's really amazing how one simple fruit can be so beneficial. First of all, apples effectively reduce the acidity in the stomach, decreasing the risk of acid reflux. They are also very rich with fiber, which is very beneficial for preventing acid reflux in strengthening all of the muscles in the body, including LES. Not to mention that it's very good for snacks instead of junk food and common snacks, which are the main provocateurs for acid reflux to occur.

Of course, if wouldn't be very smart of you to switch to an all-apple diet instantly, but eating a couple of apples each day is definitely a good way to keep your stomach healthy. Try eating an apple after a heavy meal in order to calm down the stomach. However, if your problems persist you should definitely consult with your doctor about using drugs like Nexium or applying even more serious treatment.
