If you want to claim for holiday sickness after a holiday in Tunisia you should contact a personal injury solicitor who specialises in holiday illness compensation claims when you return to the UK.
Strict standards of health and hygiene must be practised in all inclusive hotels to ensure food does not become contaminated as this type of holiday hotel caters for hundreds, if not thousands, of people every day. Buffet style food is usually offered at all inclusive hotel restaurants and it is vital that the food is stored, cooked and maintained at proper temperatures to ensure contamination does not take place. Food should be served fresh every day and never left out in the open where flies and other insects can contaminate it. Salmonella bacteria spread quickly in warm environments and cold food must always be chilled at the proper temperature, including salads which should never be served warm.
When one person becomes ill after eating food at an all inclusive hotel it is likely that an outbreak of food poisoning will occur, as many holidaymakers eat the same food from the same restaurants. Food must not be allowed to become contaminated with dirt or faeces and cross contamination can also result in serious illness. This usually occurs when kitchen worktops and utensils are not washed down properly and when the same cutting boards are used for different foods without being washed in between. Cross contamination can also take place when freshly cooked food is piled on top of food that is already being served. However mild your illness is after eating contaminated food, you should make a compensation claim against the tour operator if their negligence has caused your illness.
It is worth remembering that tour operators earn millions of pounds each year from holidaymakers and, if you become ill after eating contaminated food, you are well within your rights to claim money for a spoilt holiday, pain and suffering and any medical expenses you have incurred. Poor standards of food and hygiene are not acceptable in holiday hotels and regular inspections must be carried out by the tour operator to ensure standards are high. Some hotels in Tunisia have even seen repeat outbreaks of food poisoning with many holidaymakers falling ill with symptoms of sickness, diarrhoea and stomach cramps.
Most cases of holiday food poisoning clear up within 3-4 day but, if you have become seriously ill with a food related sickness, your symptoms could last for weeks or even months. Some holidaymakers who have suffered Salmonella and E.coli food poisoning have required further treatment when they arrive back in the UK and been unable to return to work. If this happens you could also claim compensation for loss of income. However mild or severe your holiday illness is, speak to a no win, no fee solicitor as soon as possible when you return home to see if you have a strong case for compensation.
Take a note of the names of other guests who have the same symptoms as you as this could help with a compensation claim when you return to the UK, and take photographic or video evidence where possible. There is no excuse for poor standards of hygiene in a holiday hotel. If the holiday representative or the tour operator offers you compensation or money off vouchers, refuse to accept them, until you have sought legal advice as you could be entitled to much more than they are offering.
