For individuals who do not have the luxury of allocating a bigger space in their homes for a doll collection, a miniature doll collection is the best option than to pay for another partition in your house. The details spent into these tiny creations show the talent of the artist or craftsmen of these figures. There was even a series of episodes in CSI Las Vegas that quickly shown the process of creating miniature dolls and its backdrop. Unfortunately, the craftsman in that story was a female serial killer but that is just an interesting segway to this wonderful craft.

So what are these miniature dolls usually made of? Most miniature figures nowadays are customized and handcrafted using polymer clay. This is a kind of clay that can be easily sculpted and is made specifically for creating dolls and even fashion accessories such as clay earrings and beads. It is sold by blocks and comes with different vibrant colors. Some brands even have a skin tone or bisque like quality that is ideal for creating porcelain-like dolls.

Most craftsmen, hobbyists, and art enthusiasts prefer the flexibility of this material as it is more suitable for detailing and customization. Its bendable, soft, and elastic features make it easier to mold and sculpt while still retaining the form you want to create. Once you have already sculpted a figure or created your doll, you will then allow it to cure in just even your regular home oven.

Another characteristic of this clay is that it does not change or shrink during the baking process. This is just like pottery in a kiln. The typical setting for the temperature is at 265 F- 275 F for 15 minutes per ¼" of thickness. However, the availability of air-dry polymer clays makes it easier to set and retain the mold without baking. This can even be painted and colored with other media if you like.

Polymer clay doll collection is easy to start and a good hobby for those who are bored. Instead of buying ready-made dolls, you can create your own collection and create a wonderful scene. An old train set can even be revitalized by creatively setting a backdrop and incorporating miniature polymer clay dolls to make the scene more lifelike. If you decide to head towards your craft store and start sculpting your own custom miniature doll collection, also include some set of tools such as sculpting knife, wire mesh, rollers, wedging boards, brushes, and sculpting molds and stands.

If you would like to get started in collecting dolls, or introduce a loved one to the tradition of doll collecting it might be a good idea to start with dolls that interest them and are of relatively low cost. Our Generation Dolls are great for younger girls while Monster High Dolls might be better aimed at pre-teen and teenage young ladies.
