Before going on your first African safari holiday, it can be quite confusing to figure out what you need to pack, and what you can do without. To lighten your mind (and maybe your suitcase!) a little, I have put together this packing list which includes items that you should pack for your Tanzania safari trip.

What clothing to pack?

  • Day to day clothing should be of a neutral colour, you should not wear any bright blues – as these tend to attract Tsetse flies, which deliver a nasty bite!

  • You should bring at least 1 warm sweater or fleece with you on safari, as it can get quite chilly in the evenings, and first thing in the morning.

  • The type of shoes you wear on safari should be whatever makes you comfortable, but if possible, I suggest a strong pair of walking boots.

  • To protect yourself from the strong rays of the African sun, you should wear a wide-brimmed hat as well as a pair of UV 99%+ protected sun glasses.

Should I bring any health products?

  • Mosquito repellent will help to keep the Malaria spreading pests at bay to some extent, there are many different types of sprays available, with some being organic and some containing chemicals such as DEET, which one you use is down to yourself.

  • Sun block with SPF 40+ is required to protect your skin from the sun whilst in Tanzania, and sun block should be applied to more sensitive areas, such as the nose and ears.

Is there anything I can bring to enhance my safari experience so I get the most out of it?

  • You will find that many of the animals you will see whilst on safari might be out of view from your location on the dirt road, so a pair of binoculars will help to see those which are in the distance.

  • To increase your knowledge prior to/during your safari, you can read Tanzania bird and animal books, as well as destination guides.

  • A camera and the essential photography accessories (spare film/memory, charger/spare batteries, tripod, etc) will come into its own whilst on safari in Tanzania, as you have countless amounts of fantastic photography opportunities.
