If you’re like many parents of teenagers, you’ve probably been hearing about The Social Network (movie) since last fall but haven’t been able to find the time to actually sit down and watch it. Well, no worries because our staff writers have created a brief synopsis of the movie as well as some interesting commentary on the movie’s reception with teens.
The movie, The Social Network, is a story told in flashback style about the invention and later lawsuits stemming from the social networking website Facebook. The movie starts out with Mark Zuckerberger at a local pub with his girlfriend, Erica. As he is talking, Erica gets tired of Marks condescending attitude and the way he talks down to her. She ends the relationship after what she feels are some degrading comments towards her and storms out.
Mark, being a little drunk, decides to blog about Erica in a less that flattering way. With his friends close by, the idea of a website to rate girls against each other begins to develop and they call it FaceMash. The site is a success and gets the attention of other student as well as campus security.
The Winklevoss twins also hear the news of his popularity and decide to use him for their own site they are putting together. In the meantime, Mark comes up with the idea for TheFaceBook and with his friend Eduardo, he begins to put his idea to work.
As TheFaceBook grows in popularity, Sean is brought in on the project and the "The" is dropped from the name, making it FaceBook. Things begin to start getting rough for Mark and Eduardo as other people try to take charge of and credit for FaceBook. The Winklevoss twins allege that Mark stole the idea for FaceBook from them. Eduardo pulls out his financial backing and freezes the bank accounts because he believes Sean is taking to much control of the company.
In the end, Mark is left with a Company that has made him very rich at a young age and has lost a lot of friends along the way. There are many scenes of Mark in deposition while being sued by Eduardo and the Winklevoss twins. Mark gets advice from his attorneys to settle, which he decides to do.
The Social Network, a Columbia Pictures film, opened on October 1, 2010 to critical acclaim. It has won several awards since it’s debut, the film won the Best Motion Picture at the 68th Golden Globe Awards on January 16, 2011. The film also won the awards for Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Original Soundtrack, giving it the most wins of the night. On February 13, 2011, the film won the awards for the Best Editing, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Director at the BAFTA. The film also won three Academy Awards for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Editing and Best New Soundtrack.
Most teens love this movie and see it as the movie that defines their generation. This film is for the 2000′s like Breakfast Club was for the 80′s and American Graffiti was for the 60′s. This film captured the collective consciousness of the teens of this era. Many teens can’t imagine life without FaceBook. It is how they connect and communicate.
As a reminder to our readers, we find it important to warn teens of the dangers of sharing to much information on line. With all the pictures that are put up on Facebook and the sharing of personal information, it all becomes public and can come back to hurt them later. Once something is put online, it is out there forever. If you put up something you will later regret, there is no way of getting it back. With all the cyber bullying and sexting that is going on, it is important to know what your children are doing and where they are going online.
