Many homeowners and gardeners like the convenience of leaf blowers. They are used for grounds maintenance to help clean gardens, yards, patios, sidewalks and driveways. Originating in Japan in the 1970s, leaf blowers became quite popular in the 1990s and have maintained this popularity over the years. This is due to the fact that leaf blowers are relatively low in cost, easy to use, and quite effective in removing leaves and other debris. If you are in the market, you will want to look at the different power sources used by leaf blowers as well as the different types that are available. Having a budget in mind is also a good idea, because even though you can find leaf blowers that are relatively inexpensive, there are also models with plenty of bells and whistles that can be more expensive. It simply depends on what you are looking for and what you need.
There are two main power sources for leaf blowers, electric and gas, but there are some battery operated models out there. The electric leaf blowers use an electric motor to power the fan, and this means that they use an electrical cord that is connected to a power outlet. You will want to look at the length of cord and also consider the length of the extension cords you have around the house. If you don't have a cord that will allow you to reach from the power outlets on your house to all of the areas where you want to use leaf blowers, you will need to look into getting a larger extension cord. If you are struggling with electric models because of the cord, you might look into the battery powered electric leaf blowers. These work well and use rechargeable batteries, but because of the limited operating time these leaf blowers are better for use in small areas.
The gas powered leaf blowers are very popular with people who don't like the hassle and restrictions that the cord on the electric models can provide. These leaf blowers use a mixture of gasoline and oil, much like many snow blowers and lawn mowers. It is common to find the two stroke leaf blowers as well as the four-stroke engine models. Most gas-powered models use an electric ignition system to make them easier to start.
Leaf blowers come in three main designs, handheld, backpack, and the type that must be wheeled around or are self-propelled. The handheld models are popular because they are very convenient and are generally lightweight as well. They have plenty of power for most simple jobs and come in both gas and electric models. The backpack leaf blowers are most often powered by gasoline and use a harness that is worn on the back. These leaf blowers are often used by employees of professional lawn and garden companies and work well in larger areas for more difficult jobs. The heavy duty models for the largest jobs are designed for a person to walk-behind or wheel around. These are generally considered to be commercial models and are most frequently powered by gasoline. Knowing your needs will help you determine which model will work for you.
