Too many times, necessary safety protocol for a riding mower is overlooked. These powerful machines offer us plenty of convenience when landscaping, but a riding mower can cause serious injury if they are not used properly. By following the instructions to correctly use a riding mower always provided by the manufacturer, your landscaping can be done safely for both you and your family.
Each specific riding mower will come with a user's manual that will outline how every feature of your machine is properly used. Read and take note of all safety labels located on the riding mower. Going over all the controls on your lawn mower is important before you try to use it for the first time. A riding mower should only be used by people who know and understand all of the controls and safety precautions of the machine.
The area which you intend to use your riding mower on should be clear of all debris including rocks, toys, wires, etc. These items could be picked up by the blades of a riding mower and projected in any direction. Be sure the area is clear of all people before mowing, and if you have children, make sure they understand the riding mower is not a toy and to stay away from it when it is in use. Be aware of the mower discharge direction and make sure not to point it at anyone. Always ensure the grass bagger or mower guard is securely in place before you begin using your riding mower.
Always stop operating the riding mower if you see anyone carelessly enter the area being worked on. Most riding mower accidents occur when the machine is turning, so be sure to take care and slow down when making a turn. It is always good practice to turn the machine off if you need to leave it unattended, even for a minute. Whenever you stop or park a riding mower be sure to use the parking break to prevent it from rolling. A good rule of thumb is to only mow when there is appropriate daylight in order to have an unobstructed view of your lawn. A riding mower is a powerful tool.
When operating a riding mower, it is important to be of sound mind and not under the influence of any substances. This includes prescribed medications that may alter your sober state of mind. If you are prescribed glasses or contacts, they should be worn when using a riding mower. The riding mower is designed to be operated by one person, so giving rides to kids or other people could be hazardous. Another good tip is to wear long shirts and pants in order to protect your body should any debris fly about. Safety eyewear is also a good idea to protect from debris. A child should never be allowed to operate the machine.
Always stop the engine of your mower if you need to perform any maintenance operation. The riding lawn mower is a great modern tool of convenience for landscaping when it is used safely and correctly.
