Although many may have no qualms about popping a painkiller every now and then, some may prefer to explore other methods in managing their pain. A TENS Unit is fast becoming a faithful companion to the everyday man as many literally do not leave home without their TENS Units. An acronym for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Simulation, this mouthful of a term simple infers the use of electrical impulses to excite areas of the body in close contact or proximity to the device. Even though it may portray ground-breaking technology, when in actual fact the use of electricity to control pain was commonplace in ancient days. Perhaps lacking in portability for easy carting about during one’s daily routine, this concept of underlying currents continues to be improved for modern day use.
As the TENS Unit effectively spells freedom from aching joints and post-operative pain, a user embraces it into his or her life as an assurance of daily well-being. Rather than rely on medication, sufferer turns to these devices in order to alleviate both acute and chronic pain often caused by arthritis, joint pains and other conditions. Although some swear by its effectiveness, others may not be so quick to join the band of advocates as its use produces varied results amongst the masses. For some, respite may be whole whereas for others, they may only experience a reduced degree of pain. Whilst the latter group still requires an intake of drugs, doses may be reduced thus spelling lesser dependence on painkillers in the long term. Relief from pain may also last throughout durations differing from one user to the other.
As electrical currents are emitted to deliver a painless sensation to areas concerned, the principle of disrupting the pain cycle is thus achieved. At the same time, the physiological side of the human body is triggered to release endorphins. As nature’s painkillers, they become the rose-colored glasses through which one in pain views a rosier picture of the situation. Since its use involves electricity, users are advised to consult their physicians to ensure TENS Units are properly administered for treatment of their pain. As the amount and frequency of current is tweaked to one’s needs, it is not advisable to share devices unless specifically approved by medical experts.
Albeit non invasive, this tool is a no-no for those with pacemakers, suffering from fits and expecting mothers. Cancer patients are ill-advised to using them as it may spur growth of cancer cells.
