Proper Hot Tub Placement Ensures Peak Enjoyment

The placement of the hot tub is important not only to ensure maximum enjoyment, but because of practical reasons. Therefore, it is important to take a few factors into consideration. The first is the proximity to the house. Many people find that they get more use from the unit when it is closer to the house, especially in the colder months. Another consideration is whether or not to have a roof or overhead cover. This is very nice on a rainy day, to provide protection from the elements. However, some people enjoy gazing at the stars at night and do not want the view obstructed. Still others actually install it indoors, in a sunroom or dedicated spa area.
Regardless of where it ends up, the surface has to be able to support the heavy load of not only the hot tub itself, but also the weight of the water and several people. This is not as much of an issue if it will be outside on the ground. The main consideration here is that the surface is flat. This can be achieved by pouring a concrete slab or cement, laying down paver stones, or using an existing foundation. Another, less expensive option, is the use of crushed gravel or rock. In this situation, a common practice is to surround the area with railroad ties or lumber.
If the unit will be on a wooden deck, it is imperative that it has a reinforced support system. When indoors, there needs to be proper ventilation to allow moisture to escape, which will prevent mildew build-up. Also, remember to leave enough space to gain access to the equipment panel and room to change the hot tub filters. The unit will also have to be near an electrical circuit for power and a gas line, if the heater will run on gas. An enclosed cupboard will keep hot tub chemicals organized and close.
Another option is a free-standing gazebo, which allows people to enjoy the outdoors and nature, while being covered and protected. It may or may not have windows and a door that will close, as well as seating surrounding the unit. Built-in lights and a sound system will magnify the entertainment level. Privacy should also be taken into consideration. A fence or bushes will block the neighbors line of vision. Finally, no one wants to sit in an outdoor tub and stare at a brick wall, which is why many people enjoy having the unit on a raised deck that overlooks a lake, mountain or garden.
