Getting pregnant with twins is a very special gift to a family. Imagine that you have to double you preparation to welcome your two little babies at once. And of course more attention and care should be provided to the pregnant mother. Getting twins should be a kind of surprise which can be accepted by a couple in different ways.

When the majority of couples accept this precious gift with happiness and cheerfulness, there are other couples who accept this with hesitation and apprehension. There are indeed a lot of factors to be considered as it comes to getting pregnant with twins and raising two children at the same time.

The two most important factors are physical health and financial ability. You could face a higher risk and probability of complications such as premature birth and preeclampsia. You may also imagine that your spending will almost double when raising a twin which, I think, is the major concern of almost every couple.

However you may be among those couples who want to get pregnant with twins and are trying hard to achieve it. It will not be easy, but still possible. Please understand that are some hereditary factors that may affect your attempt to get twins. Having twins has something to do with your family history of having twins.

Studies have shown that twinning, especially fraternal twinning, has a genetic basis. Fraternal twinning happens when two different eggs (ova) are fertilized by two different sperm cells at the same time to form two zygotes hence fraternal twins are also called dizygotic twins or non-identical twins.

But the key factor for this fraternal twinning to happen, which is the ability to release more than one egg, lies only in the mother. There is no evidence that the father’s factor comes into account in this mechanism. On the other hand, it seems that monozygotic or identical twinning is not influenced by a hereditary factor.

Other believes which is not backed up by authentic studies is saying that having many children will increase the probability to get pregnant with twins of the following pregnancy. Some people will probably tell you that breastfeeding while pregnant can increase the chances to have twins. This theory is backed up by some research which concludes that becoming pregnant while breastfeeding can increase the probability to conceive twins by about nine times higher.

Another idea is to postpone your pregnancy to an older age. It is believed and may be supported by some studies that getting pregnant in your late 30’s will increase the probability to conceive twins. But as we know, getting pregnant in older age is already risky, the more if you have to conceive twins. It is said that ovulation becomes faster at that age. But I doubt it will be successful.

There is also a recommendation based on a study by a reputable institution to increase your Body Mass Index (BMI) to 30 or higher is better, which means that you should be considered as obese. If your BMI is 25 you are already considered as overweight. While you may have the understanding that overweight or obese women are most likely to suffer from infertility, then I may think that this issue should be a clarified.

So the best tip if you want to get pregnant with twins is to consult your doctor or obstetrician. He or she will provide you with the best reliable information on this issue. And you can clarify the above issues as well.
