There are several nail fungus treatment therapies and it is sometimes difficult to choose the right treatment. Fungal infections, especially under the toenail, can be rather unsightly especially in advanced cases of fungal infection. The infection attacks the area directly underneath the nail which makes it difficult to reach the infected area.
The best way to prevent fungal infection from taking hold is to keep the toenails clipped as close to the skin as possible. And, the first step to treating a toenail fungal infection is to trim the toenails as close to the skin as possible without damaging the toe. Trimming the nails as far as possible rids the nails of as much fungus as possible.
Fill up a pan of water that is large enough to contain both feet. Pour enough vinegar in the pan to cover the toes. Soak the toes for at least 30 minutes a day for two to three weeks and measure the results. Make sure to change the vinegar every third day with fresh vinegar.
Fill a foot pan large enough to hold both feet with vinegar so that the vinegar covers the toes completely. Soak the toes for thirty minutes a day for two to three weeks. The same vinegar can be used for three days but after three days throw out the vinegar and use fresh vinegar.
Toenail and fingernail fungus is actually a type of ringworm infection which strikes toenails more commonly than fingernails. The infection can go unnoticed especially if the nails are covered with toenail polish. Some men do not examine their feet on a regular basis and can go weeks without realizing that they have a toenail infection.
People who wear tight fitting shoes for most of the day are more susceptible to developing an infection of the toenail. People who frequent public swimming pools or use public showers are susceptible to acquiring an infection as are people who sit for pedicures. Make sure that nail salons use only sterilized pedicure instruments on each new customer.
Fungal infections love a dark and moist environment which is found in tight closed end shoes. It is important to practice good hygiene and keep feet washed daily and always wear a clean pair of socks. If one can, he should air out his feet and then change his socks each time he removes and puts his shoes back on.
Treating fungal infections can be a long process because the infection is underneath the nails and is difficult to reach. Some nail fungus treatment periods will last up to six months and sometimes a year before the fungal infection is eradicated. Some people have success with simple vinegar soaks while others have fungal infections resistant to vinegar treatments. Anti-fungal oral medications are available for deep seated infections. Laser treatments are gaining in popularity but some insurance companies do not pay for laser therapy so it is up to the individual to decide if laser therapy is worth the out of pocket cost.
