The days of juggling a handheld camera whilst riding your bike are all but over, and thankfully so is the burden of carrying extremely heavy filming equipment with you when riding. Modern, lightweight HD action cameras allow you to capture the excitement of your ride with the advantage of not even knowing it’s there.
The minimal size and weight of action cameras allow you to consider several different methods when mounting your HD camera on yourself or on your mountain bike. Here are some of the possible options:
A helmet mount is undoubtedly one of the best ways to capture high speed video footage from a rider’s perspective. Helmet mounts come in several variations, such as the front helmet mount that a rider can strap to a helmet in the style of a headlamp and can be extended to face back at the rider to capture self-portrait-style footage.
Owners of the smaller bullet-style action cameras may be more inclined to use a velcro helmet mount, which attaches to the side of your helmet using a strong adhesive pad and elasticated straps. This style of mount makes it easy to detach the action camera, which can be useful in between short periods of filming.
Goggle strap mounts are another popular mounting method, particularly with downhill mountain riders. This style of mount provides excellent ‘point-of-view’ footage as the camera sits on the side of your goggles and follows your eye line as you ride.
For the mountain biking enthusiasts out there who don’t wear a helmet, or prefer not to be connected to the camera, a rollbar mount is the ideal solution. The mount attaches securely to the bike’s handlebars and can be rotated to give the perfect angle to capture your ride.
Another bike-mount option is the super strong, lightweight and waterproof Flymount. Popular with downhill and park riders respectively, this mount can be attached to the bike handlebars, frame or forks. An essential camera mount choice for those who like to ride in the rain.
With so many HD camera mount options available to you, it’s hard to know what’s best for the conditions you prefer to ride in. No matter what type of action camera mount you choose, it’s always important to ensure the mount you have is suitable for your device.
