It may not seem apparent, but the choice of furniture in room can have a definite affect on the mood of the room itself. It is a psychological issue, of course, and works in much the same way as the arrangement of furniture can create calm, according of the laws of feng shui. When it comes to wood furniture, darker colours can drain a room of light, and lighter colours can enhance a sense of positivity, both of which can have a definite effect on the person in a room. Understandably, pine furniture is considered ideal.

In the case of bedrooms, for example, there is a predominance of pine in modern homes, with pine flooring complemented by a pine bed, a pine wardrobe and a pine chest of drawers. Of course, the wood is not always in its natural colour and can often be stained or painted. However, by and large, the colours include white, ivory and cream painted furniture that can accomplish the same brightening effect that the natural pale yellow hue of pine wood does.

Perhaps not everyone is convinced, and believe this sort of thing to be gobbledegook, but there is scientific evidence to support the theory behind colour therapy. Soon after the Second World War, in the late 1940s, research was conducted by a Russian scientist, SV Krakov, whereby he separated wavelengths of the light spectrum to isolate colour and measured their respective effects on the human nervous system. He found that under red light blood pressure rose, while under blue and white lights, the pulse rate fell and nervous system relaxed. As a result of his findings, colour therapy is used to treat a variety of ailments, including sleep disorders and seasonal affective disorder.

The fact is that a dark room can have a detrimental effect on mood, while a room filled with a bright light, such as natural daylight, can have an uplifting effect. What this means is that the sunnier the room the more positive boost a person will experience. No doubt, this is a welcome factor for all of us when getting up in the morning.

This is one of the reasons why bright furniture is desirable in a bedroom. Of course, they can benefit anywhere, with kitchens, for example, being one place where a lot of activity typically occurs and where a positiveness is ideal.

Pine has a natural brightness that maintains a high light rate in the bedroom through a variety of furniture options. Perhaps the most prominent piece after a bed is the wardrobe, and as such it can have a big bearing on the room. The Mottisfont waxed pine combination wardrobe, for example, is a model with two doors, and three drawers and an exterior mirror. However, its natural colour, waxed to a high shine, serves to reflect natural sunlight around a room. It can also be painted, with a choice of white, ivory and cream available, depending on the desired decor and style.

A larger model is the Camden triple wardrobe, which comes in a mixture of solid pine and ash. It is a significant size, and obviously will only fit a larger bedroom. However, at almost 2 metres high and 1.7metres wide, it offers a huge amount of storage space as well as ample surface area.

Of course, taking up too much room will defeat the purpose, so choosing furniture that fits the room size and does not create narrow areas that are easily cluttered is important. So, more modest sized items, such as the One Range single solid pine wardrobe, would be better.

Narrow and tall, it allows for plenty of hanging room, but sports the natural yellow colour of pine. Alternatively, it can come in a variety of finishes, from lacquered to waxed, and as an item of white or cream painted furniture, can be equally effective in handling light.

Interestingly, while light is good for mood, it is not good for sleep, which is why heavy curtains are recommended for night time. That way, the perfect balance between dark and light, sleeping and waking, can be achieved. Thankfully, naturally coloured pine furniture will not glow in the dark!
