There are many reasons that people choose careers in the medical field. Some of these reasons include the high salaries, the prestige and the ability to help others. The demand for qualified individuals in this field is extremely high and competitive, as well. Therefore, for persons, in Rhode Island, who wish to begin a career in such specialties as cardiology, it is crucial for them to obtain the proper training.

The first step, to a successful college career and becoming a Rhode Island cardiologist, is for students to be successful in high school. They must maintain high GPAs and have a strong background in such courses as science and math. This is essential for any students who are interested in medical-related fields such as cardiology.

After students graduate from high school, they must then complete a four-year training program in pre-med at a qualified college or university. During this time, they will need to complete such classes as general chemistry, biology, organic chemistry and physics. Since medical school is highly competitive, they will want to maintain high GPAs throughout their college career. They should also begin studying for the Medical Colleges Admissions Test (MCAT) during this time, as well. This is crucial in that if student's GPAs and test scores are not satisfactory, they cannot enter medical school. Only student's with extremely high scores can enroll in cardiology programs.

After students complete all of the above prerequisites, they can then take the MCAT. Their results of this exam, along with their overall GPAs, are the main things that determine their eligibility for medical school. There are some other factors that play a role in the admissions process including such things as interviews and extracurricular activities.

The United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) is a four-part exam that helps to determine the form of residency that students will receive after their second year of medical school. All students need to complete a residency before they can become a licensed Rhode Island cardiologist. The length of a typical residency for a cardiologist is three years. After residency is successfully completed, students must then partake in a two-year cardiology fellowship. After students complete this entire process, which usually takes anywhere from 12 to 13 years, they can then become a cardiologist.

In conclusion, the job of a cardiologist offers many attractive benefits such as high salaries, prestige and the ability to help others. The demand for qualified cardiologists is extremely high, and the competition to fill these positions can be quite fierce. However, with the proper training and determination, people can be well on their way to the career of their dreams.
