How To Use Remote DBAs For Efficiency
Using a remote database administrator (DBA) prevents a business from having to hire an in-house employee for database management and maintenance. In the event a company wants an in house DBA, using remote DBAs allows the company to not require that person to work 24/7 as described below in the case where the company wants to save money,
In the past, it was an advantage to have a database specialist on hand as part of the office staff. The DBA could step in quickly in case there were updates or any issues with the system that needed immediate attention. Over the years, software and hardware became more reliable and virtual IT workers became more prevalent, it became less necessary for on-site database management.
Now, it is more common to have a remote DBA handle all of a company’s database management needs. The equipment and programs can be monitored 24 hours a day, seven days a week by the remote management team. If something surprising happens after-hours, a support specialist can monitor and fix the problem without anyone having to visit the building. It is all done quickly and efficiently through secure remote access. Should this happen during office hours, there is no travel time to slow down the solution process.
The remote database administration industry has morphed once again. For remote DBA companies that are large enough with several skilled specialists on staff, they are able to work together while living far apart. In keeping with the use of remote technology, these DBAs are able to serve clients in the same time zone as they live. If there is a problem during office hours, they do not have to juggle for up to three hours, waiting for someone to be available or face a nervous business owner who has been working himself into a frenzy while awaiting assistance.
For top DBAs working for the same company, it makes their jobs easier as well. They are able to do things that were once a in 24-hour environment. These professionals are now able to work relatively normal business hours. They can take the occasional vacation day or sick leave without things coming to a standstill in their absence. If one dedicated administrator is unavailable the company can substitute an equally-trained expert to service the problem as needed.
