If, for any reason, you lose your tooth/teeth, the surrounding teeth may start to change their position and lean towards the gaps. This may well affect the tissue around your remaining teeth, and could eventually cause tooth decay and gum disease. Your dentist will usually recommend filling these caps with partial dentures which can be attached to your natural teeth with either metals clamps or precision attachments. This procedure is less invasive than having permanent dentures fitted and normally does not require any further dental visits.

Although partial dentures work extremely well, some people opt to have dental implants to replace their missing teeth. A dental implant is a metal rod which is placed into the jawline onto which implant tooth/teeth can be attached. These rods are normally made of surgical metal and over time the jaw bone will fuse with the rod making it an ideal platform for crowns or bridges.

This procedure involves minor operations and the recipient must be in good health for the implant to be successful. A dental implant can help to slow down the shrinkage of the jawbone which occurs when you lose your natural teeth, and because an implant anchors teeth securely there's less chance of dentures moving around.

A patient may experience some discomfort after surgery, but this can normally be treated with over the counter pain killers and will only last for a short period of time.

Implant dentures are more costly than partial dentures, and the costs can vary depending upon where you live, and from one dental practice to another. Dental implants do require surgery and therefore the cost of anesthetic and after care must be taken into account. If you have dental insurance this will most likely cover a large proportion of the cost. On the other hand your dentist may be able to offer you a payment plan. Certainly it's worth shopping around to find the best deal available. Low cost dentures are available in some areas, but be sure you investigate them thoroughly before making a decision.

Care of your teeth will make any dental procedure easier and the outcome successful. Oral hygiene helps to counteract bacteria which in turn will mean your teeth and gums remain healthy.

Everyone likes to look good, and let's face it a toothless smile does nothing for the ego! Losing teeth is not always avoidable, but replacing them with either partial dentures or denture implants will help to maintain the general wellbeing of your teeth and gums.
