There are many choices when it comes to studying the English language. If you are learning English as a second language, you need to choose a school carefully. Here are some pointers to help you decide.
Reputation: If a school has been around for a long time, it is probably a good school. If the school is also part of a larger group of English language schools around the world, that is also a good sign. You may also get information from other English language students about schools they recommend. If you are spending money on an English school, it’s important to know that your money is being well spent.
Location and facilities: This depends on whether you are choosing an English school close to your home or whether you have the luxury of choosing a school somewhere else around the world. If you can travel to another country to learn English, it’s a good idea to choose an English speaking country. Stepping outside the classroom will put you into contact with lots of other English speakers. You will have no choice but to speak English and that’s the best way to learn. Wherever you decide to study, make sure the location is somewhere that you will feel happy. A city location provides plenty of activities to do when you are not studying. That means you will be able to enjoy yourself and meet other people to practise your English with. You should also look for an English school with modern facilities, including up to date computer equipment.
Qualified teachers: Choosing a school with a good reputation will also ensure that you will be taught by qualified teachers who are really enthusiastic about the job. Learning from a friendly and experienced teacher who is well prepared for the lessons will make the job of learning English much easier. A good teacher will make learning fun, help you to study for exams and help you to focus on the areas you need to improve. You will look forward to going to class and feel that you are making good progress.
Courses: Most English schools offer a variety of courses, depending on your needs. There will a choice of part-time and full-time and courses will be aimed at particular levels. Make sure you have an assessment before you start, to ensure that you are enrolled in a course at your level. Look carefully at the courses that are available and choose something that meets your needs and the plans you have for the future. Find out about the certificate or qualification you will receive at the end of the course, and make sure it meets your requirements.
Interaction with other students: If you choose a school that takes students from all around the world, you will meet a wide variety of people and you will all be learning English together. You will have to speak to each other in English as it will be the only way you can communicate. That means extra practice which is always good. A good English language school will also arrange social activities for its students, which will help you to get to know your fellow students better and will often result in lifelong friendships.
