If your child is around three years of age and showing an inclination to get rid of diapers then you should give the potty training in one day program a try. This concept is a good alternative for working parents who cannot afford extended potty training programs that can last for up to six months or more.
Of course, in defense of these long duration potty training programs it must be said that they can be commenced earlier and are usually much more thorough in inculcating the habit of independent potty use in toddlers.
By the time a child is three years of age, he has good physiological and psychological control over the elimination process. And also a fair degree of command over speech, his ability to communicate is good and he can easily understand and follow instructions. All these factors have given rise to the potty training in one day program.
The theory behind this program is that children learn through imitation and it is possible to impress upon them the correct procedure for elimination by making them observe and then imitate the actions. One thing you need to be aware of is that your child may not be able to use the potty independently at the end of the one-day potty training program. Also there is a preliminary build-up to the big day; you need to pick a day and then enthuse the child about it. Get it curious and energized. He has to be pepped up and you too need to be at the top of your game. Remember, one day is all you get. So you need to reinforce the potty training tenets in whatever time you have.
Before we get down to learning what the potty training in one day program is actually about, do take care to not stress your child. If it's not meant to be that day, don't fret. Give it another try on another day. But do not get harsh on the kid, take the cues from his mood and proceed accordingly.
The potty training in a day kit will include a potty, a wetting doll, and maybe appetizing liquids for the child. One the big day, use the doll to illustrate how to use the potty and subsequently clean oneself. Tasty liquids should make the child want to use the toilet a little more frequently giving you more opportunities to train him, but please do not overdo the feeding and do not give the child laxatives.
Continue to reinforce the learning on subsequent days.
