Did you know that we all have wisdom teeth? Sometimes, these teeth may grow in wrong and cause pain. When a tooth is the source of pain, it may need to be extracted. Luckily, this is not uncommon, and finding a dentist to perform a tooth extraction is quite simple.
The third wisdom tooth is more widely known as the wisdom tooth. The molar earned this name because of the stage of life it comes in. Generally, wisdom teeth will start pushing through the gums between the age of 17 and 25. Wisdom teeth serve as grinders when we eat food and are the beginning of the digestion process. These teeth do indeed play a role, but often times extraction is necessary for health purposes. The reason a wisdom tooth would need to be removed is the tooth becoming impacted, or the possibility of causing other problems if left alone. Even wisdom teeth that grow and manifest themselves in the proper way can still be the cause of infection. The location in the mouth that the wisdom tooth occupies is a trap for small bits of food to get stuck in. This part of the mouth is usually neglected with normal dental hygiene. This can lead to infections and simply stated, may just be the cause of much pain in your mouth. The extraction of wisdom teeth is similar to the extraction of any other tooth. First, a local anesthesia is used to numb the area of extraction that will make the patient more comfortable.
If your extraction involves multiple wisdom teeth, a general anesthesia is the route you will want to take as the procedure is longer and this will make for a smoother ride. The anesthesia will be administered through an I.V. and only takes a few moments to begin working. Most often the individual performing the wisdom tooth extraction will remove the tooth in pieces as this is the easiest and most effective option. This is done by breaking the tooth up using a drill or other dental tools. Don't be surprised to see blood during the extraction. The bleeding is normal and should not be a cause of concern. After the removal of the tooth or teeth, you will more than likely experience bleeding, swelling, and some discomfort. Over the course of a couple of days, you will note that all of the pain bleeding and areas that have become swollen will decrease. As with any sort of surgical procedure, wisdom tooth extraction has the risk that serious complications may arise, but this kind of occurrence is rare. Even though the risk of complication is there, it is better to take that risk over the option of leaving the wisdom tooth in place, becoming infected, and causing other problems by not having it extracted.
The best way to decide what is to be done with your wisdom tooth or teeth is by consulting a professional dentist, or dental surgeon. If you are having more than one tooth extracted, you may want to consult a dental surgeon rather than your normal dentist. A dental surgeon will specialize in this kind of procedure and is better prepared for any complications that may arise during the extraction.
