Ayot St. Lawrence is just one of the many Ayots present in the area located between Harpenden and Hertfordshire, along with Ayor St Peter or Ayot Green. Ayot St. Lawrence is actually a civil parish and a small-sized village located in Hertforshire.
The history of this Ayot is similar to the stories other English civil parishes have to uncover, and the old church located in the centre of the village is living proof of the fact that this village is actually part of the English history books. The old church is called the old Normal church, and it was demolished back in 1775, but only partially. The reason for this demolish seemed to have been the fact that the building obstructed the view from Sir Lionel Lyde's new home.
Ayot St Lawrence also has a new church, called The St Lawrence church. This church features a neo-classical architectural style, and it was designed by Nicholas Revett. The Palladian-style frontage and the Doric columns make it a real piece of art that can raise the interest of some of the most selective of tastes in art.
One peculiarity that characterizes Ayot St. Lawrence, Welwyn is the pub or inn called The Brocket Arms. This pub was established back in the 14th century, and it is said to be haunted. This is the reason why it draws a lot of tourists every year, and it is a part of the town's emblem. The small country inn offers tourists delightful moments, due to the fact it still keeps all the traditional features so many people are fascinated with. The inn has several bars and restaurants that have low ceilings, Inglewood fireplaces and oak beams that are simply magical to look at. The top-notch, delicious food that can be served at the inn, together with the real ales and wine collection turn the small place into a real God-send for hungry tourists with choosy palettes. Plus, the simple, yet traditional rooms prolong the old charm of the small in.
If we were to think of some of the most important famous figures who are strictly related to Ayot St. Lawrence, we should not forget to mention the name of

George Bernard Shaw lived in Ayot St. Lawrence for 46 years, from 1906 until he passed away in 1950. Today, his house is part of the National Trust property and it is open for public viewing. Stephen Winsten is another important figure who is related to Ayot St. Lawrence. He was Shaw's neighbor and he lived there together with his wife Claire. Winsten was a famous bibliographer.
