If you use wood for heating purposes or if you sell logs to the public then you will want to get a log splitter. The important thing to determine is what type of machine you will need. Different applications require different machines.
What is perfectly acceptable for some people might be inadequate for others. Below are some things to consider when buying a log splitter.
What is your purpose?
If you only occasionally use logs to heat your home then perhaps you can use a manual wedge style splitter. These splitters are good for the person who will only occasionally need to split wood.
The next step up from the manual wedge is the small electric powered splitter. These are very common and are like any other power tool. They are great for the person who has a decent amount of wood that they need split.
The large, gas powered splitters are ideal for the professional. These log splitters are designed for a heavy workload and constant use. If you are in the business of splitting all types of logs then you will want a gas powder model. They can be used for splitting both small logs as well as extremely large logs.
What type of logs are you going to split?
This is a serious issue that you need to think about. Like all other types of power tools the application is important. If you are splitting old seasoned wood that is not wide then an electric machine will be fine. If you are going to split green wood then you will want to get a gas-powdered machine. The reason is that the amount of power required to split green wood is enormous.
It is unwise to try and use an electric powered wood splitter for large logs. What you want to do is determine the age of the wood that you will be splitting. If you are someone who is going to split freshly cut logs then you need a very powerful machine.
Summary:
If you have ever split wood by hand then you realise how backbreaking the work is. A hand held wedge is great for someone who rarely has the need to split wood. However, if you need to split logs with any frequency you must get an electric or gas powered model.
The electric models are small and can fit in your garage or shed with your other power tools. These models are great for the homeowner who will use the splitter for personal use.
The gas models are a bit larger because they can handle much larger logs. These are ideal for anyone who is going to do serious splitting. A business will certainly want to own a gas powered splitter because these machines can split both green logs and extremely large logs.
The added benefit from using a gas-powered model is that it can be taken out into the field. This allows you to split logs anywhere you wish. These log splitters can be loaded into the back of a pickup truck and be taken wherever you wish.
