I have always been a fan of Jaguar cars. So, when it came time recently to buy myself a new car, there was only one place to go. I soon settled on the XKR convertible, and I couldn’t be more pleased. All in all, it combines top of the range technology, style and high craftsmanship to offer an undeniably superb drive.
It’s a fact however that apart from car specs and features, choosing the right car comes down to your lifestyle. For example, if my children had not by this point flown the nest, a convertible sports car would not have been a practical option. For those who are in a position to buy a luxurious, sexy, speedy drive that gives you a thrill every time you get behind the wheel and makes you feel like a silver screen super star however, you’d be hard pressed in my opinion to do better than the Jag XKR.
The following guide will explore some of the key points of the XKR convertible, so you can decide for yourself whether this car truly is a must-have.
Background
The XKR range is part of the Jaguar grand Tourer XK series. This family also includes the XK8 model, which was the first 8-cylinder vehicle produced by the high-end manufacturer. Basically, the XKR is the supercharged version of the XK8.
Both XK8 and XKR releases are the replacement of the XJS, and they’re available in both coupé and convertible versions.
Performance
In a nutshell, where the previous XK model ends, XKR carries on the race - underneath its stylish bonnet is the smooth and quiet all-aluminium 4.2-liter V-8 engine in supercharged form to deliver an impressive 420 horse power.
The XKR series, with their supercharged V8 engine, propel you from it from 0-60 in 4.2s. My model’s road handling is second to none, and of course it has all the hallmarks of the Jaguar brand with comfort and luxury at the very core of its design to add to your driving experience.
Top XKR Convertible Features
All XKR’s come standard with 18" alloy wheels for a snug road grip when driving, and specialised tyre pressure monitoring technology keeps them constantly at their best.
The car also offers a navigation system and adaptive front bi-xenon lighting (with power-wash function) as standard, while in the XK8 this is an additional option at an extra cost.
The XKR convertible’s six-speed automatic gearbox sends power to the rear wheels under the tidy supervision of dynamic stability control and computer active technology suspension. You also have the option of steering wheel mounted shift paddles to control the transmission.
When it comes to bringing this powerful beast to a fast halt, performance disc brakes do the job effortlessly. As for safety and security, when driving I feel as if I’m wrapped in an unbreakable cocoon.
And when it comes to convenience, two of my favourite perks are the keyless entry and start system, plus the centre dash touch screen computer system that integrates audio, climate control, navigation and driver information systems. Then there’s also the premium Alpine audio system with digital surround sound and subwoofer, Bluetooth wireless technology and heated 10-way power front seats.
All in all, the 2008 XKR features a wealth of innovative and highly sporty technology to make your drive both exhilarating and luxuriously comfortable
Fuel Economy
The fuel economy ratings for the XKR convertible rank at 15 mpg for city driving and 23 mpg when letting the car stretch its paces down a highway.
Cost
Back in 2008, the Jaguar XKR convertible was priced at slightly over a hundred grand – but as it’s loaded with superb features on top of it undeniable style and luxury, even with the small drop in price to date, this is a fair price to pay for such a high-end vehicle. For those on a tighter budget who are nevertheless unwilling to compromise on a truly top notch drive, fortunately you can pick up a good second hand XKR for around £35,000 – perhaps less if you’re willing to really take the time to do your research.
Conclusion
The above article demonstrates exactly why I think the Jaguar XKR convertible is one of the best and most enjoyable buys I have ever made. Instead of taking my word for it however, do yourself a favour and arrange for a test drive of this superb vehicle – it will speak for itself.
