Historical Etymology for the archipelago
History has it that the Canary Islands were named thus by the ancient Romans looking for new countries to trade with. On having discovered that these islands were inhabited with people who worshiped dogs the Romans gave the name ‘Canarii’ or the ‘people with dogs’ to the land. There are other references from ancient Greek writings too which verify the truth of this statement. Similarity to the Egyptian god ‘Anubis’, whose head resembles a dog is also stated, conveying the picture that the ancient settlers were people from Egypt. This could be a possibility due to its proximity with Africa.
