Social work is a profession that deals with improving other people's lives and helping them in any aspect, or situation. It has a number of fields and areas, and social workers can work with both government organizations, and private companies. However, all social workers have to follow a code of conduct, which is a set of ethical principles that a social worker must have.
Every organization may have its own set of values and code of conduct for its workers. However, the National Association of Social workers has developed a code of ethics for social workers all over the country, and it is very comprehensive. It applies to all types of workers, and involves all the important values and characteristics, which must be in a good worker.
One of the major ethical values is service. It means that the aim of a worker is to provide a service to the community and the people, and to help them in whatever way possible. They should also try to volunteer their services without financial gain. Another important value is social justice. This type of workers should work to bring about awareness related to different social injustices such as discrimination, poverty, and unemployment. Moreover, a worker should be aware of the dignity and worth of every human being, and should work towards their betterment. Social workers should also know the importance of human relationships, and help people who are unable to manage these relationships. Finally, they should be competent in their respective field so that they are able to help people overcome their problems.
There are also some ethical standards, which workers must follow. They should be committed to the well-being of their clients and place it above their own personal gains. They should always have the consent of an individual before providing them with help and assistance, and they are not allowed to force anyone to something. Another important standard is confidentiality. A worker must always keep his/her client's problems and information confidential, and should not disclose it to anyone except if it is required.
These are some of the important parts of a social worker code of conduct. There are also many other ethical values and standards, and they may vary according to organizations and situations. However, such type of worker is expected to have all these values, because they are important for effectively helping others.
