Burlesque outfits and clothing have, on occasion, been the inspiration for many a celebrity get-up and of late it has developed into a fully blown trend. The extraordinarily glamorous gowns and ensembles boasting rhinestones, sequins, feathers and beads are usually sported by burlesque starlets such as Immodesty Blaize, Dita Von Teese and Vicky Butterfly in Las Vegas and Paris. The transition has seen today’s A Listers in both the UK and USA wearing similar creations, making front page fashion news.

Lady Gaga attended the CFDA Fashion Awards, dubbed the ‘Oscars of Fashion’ in a burlesque inspired long black dress by Thierry Mugler and completed the vintage look with a burlesque style blunt bob wig. Starting out in the burlesque industry, the now global superstar has a wardrobe full of outfits with nods to the increasingly popular art form.

Paris Hilton celebrated her most recent birthday by hosting a fancy dress themed party and arrived in a burlesque outfit consisting of red corset, matching skirt and head dress. The corset continues to be a popular choice with it’s unsurpassed ability to create that perfect hourglass figure, pulling in the waist whilst accentuating the hips and bust line. Miss Hilton’s corset was customised and adorned with numerous Swarovski crystals adding the glitz so often associated with burlesque.

The most recent music video released by Jessie J, the UK pop sensation, depicts the young starlet at a Wonderland Tea Party with a burlesque twist. A banquet table is surrounded by eccentric characters while Jessie heads the table sporting a burlesque inspired outfit including striped stockings, a long coat and the traditional Bettie Paige hairstyle - long, straight and black with a blunt fringe. The pop star’s make up features crystals, huge eyelashes and 1940’s ghost white skin.

On another red carpet, Ex Pussy Cat Doll Nicole Scherzinger was photographed in a mini satin top hat from the Leg Avenue Burlesque Clothing Collection. Coming from a burlesque background – each of the Pussy Cat Dolls has been spotted in ensembles that would not look out of place on a showgirl’s stage. Kimberly Wyatt, for example, has just released her newest collaborative music video in which she sports a cream coloured corset mini dress, heavily decorated with pearls plus co-ordinating 40’s rolled hair and make up.

Katy Perry’s love of burlesque fashion was first noted at the 2009 MTV Europe Music Awards where she was pictured in several tiny corset dresses, sequined panties and bullet bras. The ‘I Kissed A Girl’ singer graces the cover of Vanity Fair’s June 2011 edition wearing a 1940’s flesh coloured strapless corset dress complete with vamp red lips and pinup-girl curls. A look accredited to her friend and muse – burlesque queen Dita Von Teese who is regularly photographed in burlesque clothing and coordinating accessories.
