Planning creative party theme ideas for your child is a popular concept for parents who want to throw their child a birthday bash at home. You can find decorations, invitations, and cakes for almost any theme under the sun. Another important factor in planning a successful event is finding fun games and activities to compliment your theme. These are my specialty. My website focuses on fun, D.I.Y party games. In my kid’s section I have an ever growing list of children’s games for parents still needing to find those perfect fun activities to complete their child’s birthday celebration.

The following is a list of ideas I have received the most requests for recently. If you are looking for an idea for your child the most important factor is their interest. Another factor to keep in mind is that a theme does not always have to revolve around characters or archetypes. Although princess and superhero celebrations are still popular, along with characters from children’s favorite movies and cartoons such as Dora the Explorer or Tinkerbell, you can also focus on your child’s favorite hobby or activity, such as Lego’s, cooking, art or dancing. Here is my list of creative party theme ideas for children to get your creative juices flowing.

  1. Archetype - Creative Party Theme Ideas

The archetype celebration is still very popular. These include princess, superhero, dinosaur, wild west, pirate etc. You will be able to find an abundant supply of party supplies for archetypes. When planning your event don’t be afraid to think outside of the box or give the themes a little twist if you want something a bit more original. A princess affair could become a princess tea, or a princess training day. A superhero gala usually revolves around a favorite superhero, but it doesn’t have to. If your child is creative, consider having all the guests create their own superhero. They can create costumes, names, and powers for their superhero. The point is not to limit yourself to what you think it should be, the only thing it SHOULD be is FUN!

  1. Childs Hobbies and Interest - Creative Party Theme Ideas

A couple of my most popular creative theme party ideas center on the child’s favorite thing to do. Lego celebrations are HUGE right now. I have an entire page dedicated to Lego activities on my website after having emails pour in from parents whose child wanted to have a Lego party. Most parents were having a hard time finding games to go along with this theme. I have posted a bunch of D.I.Y Lego games, plus an awesome resource to find Lego supplies. Other popular themes in this category are cooking parties and art parties. For cooking, I usually suggest finding a few simple recipes to teach the children. Having something they can each make individually such as a pizza is perfect. You could even leave the birthday cake to make at the celebration. Isn’t it funny how when children get to help in the baking and decorating of the cake they somehow always find the treat much tastier.

  1. Pop Culture - Creative Party Theme Ideas

These parties include themes such as fear factor, amazing race, survivor, etc. Some of the best success stories come from parents who have chosen an idea such as this. They have broad appeal to many age groups and are popular for both boys and girls. Don’t be intimidated trying to come up with your own party version of these popular shows. Your party does not have to contend with these big budgeted phenomenons, they just need to be fun. If you think this type of party would be perfect for your child and group you can find tons of resources on the web to help with ideas and planning.

  1. Boy Girl - Creative Party Theme Ideas

It happens all the time, your daughter wants a traditional princess event but she also wants to invite half the boys from her class. Your child’s birthday is the one day they should be able to have their cake and eat it too. If you have run into this popular dilemma consider combing themes to make the event friendly for both boys and girls. For the above problem I would suggest having a princess and knight feast, prince and princess party, or a simple Royal bash. On my page for knight and princess ideas, I have listed several popular activities that have been a hit for both girls and boys.

  1. Out of the Box - Creative Party Theme Ideas

Some parents and children have done that and been there. They want to have an event where the theme has not already been done by five of their child’s friends the month before. That was the complaint I had from one parent who emailed me wanting to throw a party focusing on Wizard of Oz. With a little creative elbow grease I was able to create a page featuring a Wizard of Oz treasure hunt idea that I am happy to report went over very well. Do not be intimidated to do try something new and different with the celebration. The web is an enormously helpful resource. If you are not an extremely creative parent, that does not mean you cannot throw an exciting celebration. All you have to do search and you can find an abundance of free ideas out there.

  1. Character - Creative Party Theme Ideas

These are the theme parties that are based on characters from movies, TV shows, books, or even history. Popular themes right now include Dora the Explorer, Tinkerbell, Mickey Mouse, and Strawberry Shortcake. Other unique character theme parties I have seen have included; the Very Hungry Caterpillar, American Girls, Swiss Family Robinson, and Jack and the Beanstalk. Some of these parties have easily found matching party supplies, while others you may have to get creative or simply go with a complimentary color scheme.

REMEMBER: When choosing your child’s birthday theme, the only rules are to choose something that excites YOUR child, and to make it FUN. Fun doesn’t always mean extravagant, and fun certainly doesn’t have to cost you and arm and a leg. You can plan a very memorable birthday party with just a bit of creativity and an open mind. Don’t forget that the main point of the party is to celebrate your child. Make this day about them and you can’t go wrong.
