Serie A League has always been one of the top leagues in Europe. The current Champions League trophy holders is Inter Milan, an Italian team that plays in Serie A. Along the years, many great players have put their mark on the teams where they have played. Among those players, we selected a few, that are still playing in the Serie A and continue to perform very well.
Wesley Sneijder – The move from Real Madrid to Inter Milan in 2009 was a great step for Sniejder’s career. He is the one that pulls the strings for club and country, his penetrating runs and passes causing a lot of problems for opposition defenses. He also has a deadly free-kick, that brought a lot of goals for Inter Milan.
Maicon – Not for a long time has there been a right-back capable of having so much influence on a game. The Inter Milan defender’s forceful runs down the right provide a great avenue of attack, not only for him to cross the ball, but for his teammates who can occupy the space vacated by opposition players trying to arrest Maicon’s attacking sorties. He has pace to burn and is also a solid defender. Keeps the outstanding Barcelona right-back Dani Alves out of the Brazil team.
Samuel Eto’o – His country’s record goalscorer, Eto’o has been one of the best marksmen in Spain over the last few years after successful spells with Mallorca and Barcelona. He has a reputation for being outspoken but no one questions his commitment to the cause. Helped Inter Milan to a Serie A, Champions League and Coppa Italia treble in 2010, and is Cameroon’s outstanding player.
Diego Milito – Despite an excellent goal-to-game ratio for Genoa and Zaragoza it was not until 2009 that one of soccer’s superpowers made a move for Milito. The transfer was anything but a gamble for Inter, with Milito thriving under Jose Mourinho and finishing top scorer as the Nerazzurri won the treble of Serie A, Champions League and Coppa Italia in 2010. His predatory finishing, impressive workrate and strong line-leading ability means he is one of the first names on the teamsheet.
Gianluigi Buffon – Together with Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas, Buffon is thought of my many observers as the best goalkeeper of the last decade. The Juventus custodian has few weaknesses and remains the most expensive goalkeeper in the world following his 2001 move from Parma to Juve.
Julio Cesar – Emerged as Brazil’s first-choice goalkeeper for the 2010 World Cup qualifiers and the Inter Milan stalwart did not let his country down. Has come back strongly from several high-profile mistakes that blighted him earlier in his career. Together with Buffon, Cesar is considered the best goalkeeper in Serie A.
Daniele De Rossi – A Roman through and through, De Rossi sweats blood for the Giallorossi cause. He is an accomplished box-to-box midfielder, with the kind of tenacity loved by the Roma supporters. He can pass, score goals and defend, and in 2005 produced an example of sportsmanship all too rare in today’s game. De Rossi scored against Messina, but replays clearly showed he had used his hand to force the ball over the line. He told referee Mauro Bergonzi that he had scored illegally and the goal was disallowed.
