Louisiana has a rigorous process for teens to obtain a driver's license. However, young drivers still need auto insurance and legal representation should an automobile accident occur. Before starting the process of getting a license, a parent or legal guardian should go the extra mile to protect their child and their assets by consulting a Louisiana personal injury lawyer.

Louisiana offers a graduated licensing system for young drivers; with each license carrying its own set of restrictions. There are three types of licenses available to teen drivers. The three licenses are a learner's permit, an intermediate license, and a full license. To apply for a learner's permit, you must be ages 15 to 17, provide two forms of identification and pay the required fees. A parent or guardian must come with you to sign necessary paperwork.

You must have a learner's permit for at least 180 days before applying for an intermediate license and be at least 16 years of age. The applicant must provide the vehicle for the road test. You must also show proof of insurance, a current license plate and registration.

Applying for a full license requires the applicant to be at least 17. They must also provide proper identification and proof of completion of the 38-hour Drivers Education Course. They must also provide a valid vehicle for the test and have a parent or legal guardian with them to provide a signature.

The minimum age for full motorcycle endorsement is 17. Endorsements can also be issued with a learners permit but 15 and 16 year olds are restricted to ride within a 3 miles distance from their residence. The applicant must pass the same series of knowledge based tests. Also, a competency test is given to demonstrate how well you operate the motorcycle. The competency test can be avoided if the applicant has successfully completed the "Motorcycle Safety Awareness and Operators Training Program" which is provided by the Louisiana State Police.

Operating a vehicle affords the driver a great amount of freedom but with this freedom comes a great amount of responsibility. No matter how conscientious a driver is they can always become the victim of a road accident caused by a reckless driver. It is always recommended that you have the phone number of a Louisiana automobile accident attorney in care any of your loved ones are ever involved in an automobile accident.
