What is Protonix?

Pantoprazole belongs to a group of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors. They are sold under the brand name Protonix. Generic Protonix is used for treating ulcers, stomach and esophagus problems. This medication works by blocking the production of acid in the stomach. Available in the form of tablets, it also helps when a person has difficulty swallowing. It also provides relief from sunburn.

How to use Protonix:

Follow your doctor’s prescription regarding the dosage thoroughly. Also inquire if there are any restrictions required on food, beverages or other activity during the course. Be careful when you buy Protonix and always check the expiry date.

Generic Protonix can be consumed with or without food. Take care that the tablet is not crushed, chewed or broken. Swallow the entire tablet with water. In case of oral granules, it is advised to take them 30 minutes before a meal. It is advised that the oral granules should be taken by mixing them with apple juice or applesauce so that they are swallowed easily. Do not take this medication with any other liquid or semi-liquid food. Take one teaspoon of applesauce and sprinkle the required dose on it. Swallow immediately without chewing. Similarly, in case of apple juice, empty the granules in a cup containing one teaspoon of apple juice, stir for few seconds and consume instantly. Pour some more apple juice in the same cup and drink so that the remaining granules are also consumed. Wash the cup or use another one for the next dose.

Ask your doctor about specific instructions and guidelines if the granules are being given to the patient though a gastric tube.

Protonix should be taken as per the direction and for the duration prescribed by the doctor. There are some typical symptoms experienced while taking this medication. Inform your doctor if the symptoms do not settle down with due course or get worse.

Missed Dose of Protonix: If you have forgotten a dose, take the missed dose if there’s adequate time for the next dose, otherwise skip the earlier dose.

However, in the event of an overdose, the patient should be rushed to the nearest medical facility to avoid any complications/serious health hazards.
