Kinabalu is the highest point in the area demarcated by the Himalaya and New Guinea. Located on the island of Borneo and being over 4,000 m high and still rising, the mountain is a real embellishment- home for a rich diversity of species. They speak good English and will offer you information and advice regarding the hike; they will also tell you a little about the mountain's history, the local legends, the soils, rocks, flora and fauna. This information will offer you a full view of the situation and complete your experience. Some additional expenses may occur if the loads are heavy or you will go above Panar Laban in the first day of the climb.

Do not bring too much with you, but do not forget the essentials: some clothing to keep you warm and protect you from the rain, a good pair of shoes, a pair of gloves for the climb, perhaps a cap, some food - rich in sugar to give you energy, and, of course, a bottle of water. This should be enough for climbing Mt Kinabalu. You will be able to refill your water bottle in several places: Carson's Falls, Paka Cave and at the huts and shelters you will find on your way. Oh, and watch out for the mountain squirrels; they might eat your chocolate.

At some point you will have to continue your climb at night; follow the thick rope on the trail and you will not get lost. Stay close to your guide and the other members of the group. The probability of a fall or small accident is low, but if, by chance, something like this occurs, you will be offered help very fast if you are with the group.

These are the few and simple rules that tourists climbing Mt Kinabalu must follow. It is not at all complicated, but precisely because it may seem too easy it is not advisable to underestimate the mountain and the unpredictable things that might happen; like always, it is better to be prepared and cautious.

Tourists that follow these rules and reach the top will be rewarded with certificates. So, give your name to the team leader before departure so that it can appear on your certificate afterwards.
