There are so many wonderful and varied landscapes to explore in the UK that can make for a memorable and affordable hiking holiday for individuals, groups and families. From the wilderness of Wales and Scotland, the rugged mountains of Snowdonia and the Highlands, the quaint walks in the Peak District, the New Forest in the South of England and the many coastal paths – so many choices can make for a colourful choice of terrain and scenery. Even though this is a very highly populated country and a small island, danger and risk is involved and it is always strongly advised to prepare and plan your hiking holiday in advance.
There are many useful guide books you can consult offering recommendations for perhaps less well known and more interesting routes. You can therefore make sure the routes you would like to cover are not too difficult for all involved or not too flat and so too easy to become boring. There are also walking and hiking forums to be found on the internet. These can be great resources to get top advice on routes. Experienced hikers and keen walkers local to where you would like are happy to share knowledge. This information can be crucial such as what weather to expect and how difficult your planned walks may be. Members of the forum can also advise on equipment that you may not have thought of that is more required in certain places, such as neck and leg gaters in particularly wet areas.
Otherwise general advice includes carrying high calorie snacks to keep everyone energised. Also sun cream may be necessary to protect adults and kids skin – even sun cream factor 50 is necessary in the UK. Insect repellent can also be a welcome item to carry in some more humid areas especially those with water and forests nearby. And of course waterproof clothing are a must. As are non slip boots which need to be well fitted otherwise blisters and other discomfort can destroy a lovely holiday experience. Also remember hiking higher above sea level is not necessarily warm even in summer– it can be cold and windy especially if you are camping. So making sure you are kitted out with the right clothing is essential. Adults and kids fleeces are ideal light, warm and windproof outdoor clothing. Getting equipped does not have to be expensive as there are also many discount outdoor clothing outlets and online stores.
Whites is a friendly online store that can advise and cater for all your outdoor clothing, kids fleeces and equipment needs. Also stocking a range of discount outdoor clothing.
