Ways for Fast Recovery after Laser Eye Surgery

People who constantly wear glasses or contacts can now undergo laser eye surgery in order to correct vision problems such as short sightedness, long sightedness, and astigmatism. Most people who had laser correction are highly pleased with the results and feel that the quality of life improved.
The procedure is popular because it is only minimally invasive, improvement in vision is almost immediate, and the risk of complications is very low. Recovery time is quick, and within a couple of days after the procedure, the majority of people can get back to normal activities. Often, glasses and contact lenses are no longer needed.
To ensure fast and complete recovery, there are certain measures to be followed. For the best outcome, one should be prepared for surgery. Proper initial evaluation by the doctor is important and he should be informed of any diseases or if any medications are currently taken, whether prescription or over the counter.
Before the surgery, the eye doctor will give instructions on how to prepare for the procedure. Be sure to follow all the instructions carefully. One should arrange to be away from work following the surgery. Most patients need to take a day off from work although it will really depend on how strenuous the job is. Consult the eye surgeon regarding the recommended return to work date and the type of occupation to ensure that it is a reasonable amount of time to return to work.
It is not advisable to drive for short distances for at least 24 hours after surgery and long distances for 72 hours after surgery. One should arrange transportation from the eye hospital after the laser surgery.
Immediately after laser eye surgery, avoid touching, rubbing, or poking the eyes. For the first few hours after the laser eye surgery in the clinic, the patient is advised to rest and keep the eyes closed as much as possible.
The first 24 hours after surgery is very important. During this time, there will still be a bit of haziness or blurriness on the treated eye. When the anesthetic has worn off a few hours after surgery, there can be a dull pain felt around the eye. One must resist the urge to scratch or rub the area to avoid damage and contamination. Upon leaving the eye hospital or clinic, sunglasses or a hat can be worn to protect the eyes which can be extra sensitive to the sun during this time.
Antibiotics and lubricating eye drops are prescribed after laser surgery. To help the eye heal, these eye drops should be put in at scheduled times. These help keep the eye moist and will prevent swelling and possible infection. While the eye is in the recovery period, eye makeup should not be worn as this can cause irritation.
Mild pain relievers may also be given to minimize discomfort that may occur after the procedure. Be sure to have all the prescriptions filled and the medications taken. It is important to take these medications exactly as prescribed.
After the procedure, there will be post surgery care instructions. Make sure that all directions are noted and be sure to have them right.
Avoid strenuous physical activity for a few days after surgery. Some clinics also recommend wearing soft protective eye masks especially at night to protect from accidental rubbing or bumping. Avoid showering after surgery to avoid water splashing into the eyes. Also, keep soap away from the eyes. Swimming is likewise contraindicated around six to eight weeks following the procedure. The doctor will advise on when normal activities can be resumed.
All follow up appointments should be kept. If anything more than mild pain or any other problems with vision are noted, the doctor should be consulted immediately. If one experiences unusual irritation or increasing redness in the treated eye, contact the eye clinic.
With modern techniques and a highly skilled eye doctor, different eye procedures such as laser eye surgery, cataract surgery, and glaucoma surgery have enjoyed high success rates. But one must prepare for the operation and follow all postoperative instructions to ensure fast recovery and best outcome.
