Intense blue Sapphire is the modern Birthstone for the month of September. It is designated for the 5th, 23rd , and 45th wedding anniversary. Sapphire is worn to protect against harm and envy.
Sapphire is derived from the Greek word "sapphirus" meaning "blue". They can be found in shades of black, grey, yellow, pink, green, and the most popular, blue. Sapphires have the closest density to the diamond. Its scratch resistant surface makes it a great gem to set in jewelry. Not only can they be found in an array of colors but also a fascinating looking gemstone called a star sapphire.
Star sapphires are named for their interesting appearance of a six rayed asterisk. This star formation appears when a single light source hits the stone. This is due to needle like inclusions called rutiles. They intersect at different angles producing what is called asterism, an optical effect appearing as a star in the light reflecting from a crystal source. The largest star sapphire, named "Star of Asia", is held at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC. It is roughly 330 carets and almost the size of a golf ball. The ancients revered this stone and thought it to bring protection to travelers.
This deep blue stone has a long history and is considered powerful and divine by many cultures. Priests thought it to symbolize purity and kings thought it brought wisdom. Buddhists believed sapphires to bring spiritual enlightenment and devotion. The Old Testament often refers to the precious gemstone and its significant role to a complete intellect. It was also thought to bring the wearer protection even after having sold their sapphire jewelry. Sapphires are rich with mystical powers by many cultures spanning the globe.
Sapphires are said to encourage emotional and physical balance. They can bring to owner wisdom and sympathy. Sapphires represent truth and reliability. Spiritual confusion, concentration problems, and depression are some issues sapphires might guide one through. The ability for long lasting and committed relationships are also said to be a mystical property of the serene royal blue gemstone.
This unique stone was made famous as a royal engagement ring. In February of 1981 Prince Charles proposed to Diana Spencer. The future princess was given the opportunity to pick out her own engagement ring. Out of several choices Diana chose an oval sapphire cut ring. That ring was estimated to cost $65,000.
Whether being a royal engagement ring or a pair of stunning sapphire earrings, sapphire jewelry make a great gift for those born in the month of September. It is also designated for the 5th, 23rd, and 4th wedding anniversary. Sapphires can also be worn by those born in the sign of Aquarius. Star sapphires are designated for those born in the sign of Virgo.
