Spring is a beautiful season that has many colors and contrasts. Each one of us who owns a lawn is quite enthusiastic much before the arrival of the spring. People buy and bring new flowers and bloomers from the local nurseries to cultivate in their home to adore their flower beds. However it’s not just bringing and sowing the plants that comprise the lawn care you have to take a lot of measures if you want your lawn to do well in spring.

First thing that you have to do is raking the lawn. It is especially important to get rid of the thatch- a roof-covering of straw, reeds, palm leaves and other similar material that gets accumulated in the winter as the trees fall off the ground. Also it helps in getting rid of the snow molds which prevent the spring grass to grow easily because of difficulty in penetration. Then you will have to check for the aeration of the lawn. In areas where there is high foot traffic in the lawn the lawns suffer from compaction, if your lawn is also suffering from this problem you will have to take measures for the proper aeration of the lawn. When you are done with the raking and aeration send a sample of your soil to the local nursery. The experts at the nursery will tell you if your soil has turned acidic and you need to add some lime to it. The grass does not grow well in the acidic environment and it is good to change the pH to neutral before it’s high time.

Next get some seeds from the market to seed new spring grass in your lawn. It is always good idea to get sow the maximum amount of seeds because overseeding will prevent the development of empty patches that may otherwise develop due to some disease, snow mold, or high traffic. When you are adding the seeds to the soil, also add adequate amount of fertilizer. You can easily buy the fertilizer from the market or make it yourself by burying the dead leaves in the mud for some days. Do not add too much fertilizer to the soil because that would lead to the development of weeds. Also apply a pre-emergent herbicide to the soil and the seeds so that the weeds are controlled much before they appear. Weeds consume much of the resources from the land and do not allow the grass to grow well. When you are done with all the above mentioned tasks then next thing you have to do is to tune your lawn mower and make it ready for the spring grass. If you don’t have a lawn mower, than go to the market and buy a new one. Make a tight lawn mowing schedule and follow it to maintain a tidy grass bed in your lawn. Keep removing the weeds regularly from the lawn. By following all these steps we can enjoy a beautiful lawn in the spring.
