Come and discover the oldest wine making region of South Africa and see for yourself the essential character and quality of one of the world's most exciting cities to explore. Along the way you can also learn about the history of this cultural part of the world. The beautiful scenery of the hills and valley, covered in early morning mists and sun glistening on the early morning dew is not what we think of when we imagine the busy streets of the city of Cape Town.

Only a few minutes' drive from the middle of town you will see the lovely green vines, just within the valley next to Table Mountain, where this plentiful zone with excellent growing conditions produces some of the finest South African wines available. In addition to the grapes and beautiful vineyards, you will see the period Cape Dutch Homesteads which are fairly large. Many of these are now comfortable guest houses and first class hotels, for example the Alphen, where it's clean and luxurious reception rooms add to the refinement of the area itself.

You can wander through the seven wine estates which make up the Constantia valley wine route and which date back to the time when the first saplings arrived from France in 1685. The lovely weather conditions have yielded excellent crops there ever since and the wine has proved extremely popular throughout the world.

One of the large estates belonging to Simon Van der Stel who was the first Governor of the Cape, is now divided into three - Groot Constantia, Buitenverwachting and Klein Constantia and they all continue to produce wines of international quality. The Constantia Valley stretches from the Wynberg Hill in the north to the Silvermine Mountains (the Tokai area) in the south. The historic Manor House which, together with the Wine Museum at Groot Constantia, is well worth a visit too.

If you wish, you can order picnic baskets and spend quality time drinking the cool wine from the farm of your choice and take in the breathtaking views, many of which go all the way down to False Bay which is situated on the Indian Ocean side of the Table Mountain range. However, if you prefer, the restaurants have gourmet food and the chefs can cook a variety of food and their exquisite dishes for you.

As you can imagine, the accommodation available for tourists in this area of Cape Town is first class and varied, ranging from small friendly first class guesthouses to luxurious hotels and spas, such as the Steenberg Hotel, where attention to detail and looking after their clients is their first priority.
