The last thing anyone wants to deal with during a Tropical Storm / Hurricane is the loss of power. Sometimes, the local utility company is not the greatest, and losing your power can occur. You need to be prepared. A Back up generator is on way to ensure that power stays on no matter the emergency. Of course, other factors can also contribute to a blackout situation. High winds and strong storms can lead to a power outage, as can an accident that causes a pole to get knocked down or causes wires to be knocked loose. No matter what the cause of the blackout is, you want to be as prepared as you possibly can. I work as a Houston Electrician and a quality generator is the best way to stay safe during this type of crisis.

Another good way to be prepared for an electrical blackout is to put together an emergency power outage kit and having it ready before disaster strikes. There are several items you should consider including in your emergency blackout kit. These include:

  • Candles or oil lamps but be sure to include matches for lighting and oil for the lamps

  • A flashlight or other source of light but be sure to include batteries for the light

  • Updated directory of the house circuitry

  • A tool kit containing the tools necessary to make electrical repairs

  • A circuit tester

  • Wire Nuts

  • Electrical tape

  • Replacement plug fuses, cartridge fuses and pull circuit breaker

  • Several different types of light bulbs

  • Replacement duplex receptacle, single pole switch and any other special switches

In addition to having the proper tools and equipment in your emergency blackout kit, you should also have some basic electrical repair knowledge. The best way to do this is to take some electrical courses, at which you can gain the knowledge necessary to make several common household electrical repairs. Even if you don't plan on becoming an electrician as a career, taking some of these basic classes will help you gain the knowledge and confidence necessary to handle an emergency blackout situation.

After the emergency situation has passed, you might want to consider hiring a certified electrician to inspect the work that you did. That way, you can be certain the repairs are correct and that you did not mistakenly create a hazardous situation for you and your family. Still, being able to make the electrical repairs yourself can save you a great deal of time and money, as it can be difficult to get an electrician to your home quickly when an emergency situation arises that affects many households.
