There are many significant painters from the past few centuries who have incorporated scenes of love and romance into some of their best work and this topic seems to continue to be popular within the mainstream art public who consider romance to be an uplifting and inspirational emotion which most will aspire to experience. This article looks into some of the most famous romantic paintings as well as the artists who created them and the focus is not only on oil painting, but also sculpture and other fields of creativity as well.

JW Waterhouse was a famous British Pre-Raphaelite painter whose work was very well connected to romance, with many of his finest paintings covering the positive and negative elements of the emotion of love within them as a highly significant element of the painting. Some examples of this included The Siren where two lovers are seen together whilst the negative side of romance was reflected within The Lady of Shalott which focused on a romantic woman in love who went in search of the man she desired, but sadly her love was never returned.

Jack Vettriano is a living artist who has become highly appreciated across North America and Europe in recent years and he is another artist to have achieved success from incorporating scenes of romance within his paintings although it is fair to say that some recent works have been more about passion and less about romance, whilst earlier works such as The Singing Butler have been more classical in depiction and achieved a stylish finished result. Besides Waterhouse and Vettriano there are many more great examples of artists who have covered romantic scenes with their work, such as Austrian Gustav Klimt who was part of an expressionist art movement.

We can conclude that certainly there is still a great interest in romance within art and this powerful image has proven successful for many artists in the past, across a wide range of artistic movements and styles. The image of love represents one of the strongest human emotions and it also affects most people's daily lives, making it an excellent topic for any artist looking to reflect modern life within their work, which is a very common thing to do within the art world. We have only touched on just a small selection of some of the great romantic artists and paintings out there, and those interested would be advised to spend more time studying this area further, with so much out there which is well worth seeing.
