The most important elements of your kitchen are a stove, a sink and a refrigerator. All these should be within arm's reach. The renovation of old house (in Finnish, remontti) might have more challenges with these, as the places for water supply and sanitation are hard to move. With new houses, these appliances might be placed more freely.

The sink and the stove should be relatively close to each other. It increases the safety, as there is no need to move the hot boiler far away from the stove, for example when overthrowing boiling water.

The placement of the different kitchen appliances should also be considered according the activity. For example, making a coffee needs electricity, water, and closet space. Next to the oven and the stove there should always be a place where hot boilers can be let down.

Everything in place

As much as possible, a storage space should be placed below the work surface. For the plates and bowls that are continuously in use the best place is under the work surface.

The place should be reserved also for the small kitchen appliances. Kitchen manufacturers have drawers and closets, where less frequently used machines can be easily pulled out and pushed away. If the places for the kitchen appliances are decided before kitchen installation, it is possible to place electrical socket inside the cupboard.

Kitchen work surfaces and cupboards are for the depth of 60 cm as normal, but the space will increase, if the depth of 70 cm is adopted. The extra ten centimeters is not usually eating too much floor space.

The final look

Cabinet doors play very important role in the kitchen expression. However, they are the most easiest to change later. Therefore materials and colors can be considered in peace after the functionality of your kitchen is in place.

Remember enough electricity

The kitchen can never have enough power outlets. Still, they do not have to be the most striking detail in your kitchen. Sockets can be hided to the bottom of the top shelves or to power poles that can be pressed out when necessary.

The kitchen needs a lot of general lighting in addition to working lights, and possibly also some mood lighting. Indirect light does not dazzle. Dimming is currently possible with some energy-saving lamps. Energy-efficient LED may provide more light on the shelves, and even in kitchen cabinets.
